This is a pretty cool comparison of how different oils KV100 and HTHS150 viscosities change after being sheered. They look at a handful of off the shelf oils along with some custom Grp3/Grp4 blends that focus in on specific VI compounds. Screen shot of results table below.

What I’m curious about is just how much engine time this test corresponds to. It sounds like he’s going to make a follow up video using his Porsche’s engine as a guinea pig but I’m motivated to buy some of that Mobil 1 5W-50 and see how much it sheers in my Mustang after a track weekend.

Great video, I do wish they had tested some higher viscocity boutique blends. All of the ones they tested with ~10 cSt pre KRL, which is interesting, but it would of been interesting to see how a HPL 5w50 does in comparson. While the HTHS shear precentage was higher on say the Mobil 1 5w50 or Moly 10w60, it's HTHS is still higher at the end of the test in absolute terms.

I agree. Just basing results on the quality of ingredients would be predictable. Amsoil would have done excellent.
Agreed and QS Euro 40 would have sheared similar to the Castrol 5W40. I know for me, it was between the HPL Euro 5W40 and the No-VII 5W30 but the 40 will end in a higher grade even though it does shear some vs. the 30 that will stay in-grade so HPL/Dave recommended sticking with the 40 in my use.

But wait, how would the new forum-darling Valvoline R&P do here? :ROFLMAO: I also noted in the comments I want him to make a video like he ask about w/r to the M1 and the change in formula.

HPL has a No VII Euro 10W-40 that might be worth considering.

So it’s awesome that the No VII was tested, because this now gives us a virgin set of readings, and looking at my 14,400 mile UOA of No VII (albeit Euro, I’m sure the tested sample was the d1G3 version), that HPL intends the “work-thickening” aspect of used oils to offset some viscosity loss from dilution.

This, when combined with the fact that HPL oils use either shear-stable VII or none at all, means an engine is significantly less likely to fall out of grade with oils blended in this way. Hope everyone enjoys their 25% off deal once the oil starts arriving next week.

Thanks, @High Performance Lubricants!

Ah right, forgot about that one. Again, I'm happy with the results of the 5W40 regular stuff, shears a bit but seems to stay close enough to 12 cST to keep me happy. I have a sample out right now after 6 mos/4K miles/3 hard track days to determine if I'll keep it in or change it.

Agreed, that was great to see, again, my favorite LSJR video to-date here. Looking forward to his M1 0W40 follow-up video and interesting he runs the no-VII 30 in his Boxster vs. M1 0W40.

I’m planning on running the No VII Euro 5w20 in my EJ253. An HTHS of 3.26 is competitive with just about any shelf-stock 5w30 at WM, and since it won’t shear there’s little risk since there’s no boost. Might be worth a little mileage gain from the lower KVs, though.

I have 4 gal of Euro 5W40 sitting on my shelf for 2 of my cars, I am intrigued by the no-VII 30, we'll see the UOA results shortly on my half-year/3 track day beating sample...
