What's wrong with shovels?

Locally at a half decent hotel there was a rape. That whole crew would show up for that. You were not in NH?

In our state fortunately we seem to have little crime.

Something is very disturbing in this post but I can't put my finger on it.

It is the phrase "...non-educated, Illegal Mexican maid staff..." that is disturbing.

Right, it is disturbing that greedy hotel proprietors EMPLOY them rather than report them to ICE and have them fined and deported.

You are making sweeping assumptions and then building a whole philosophy on top of that flimsy foundation.

have you asked every housekeeping staff member about their immigration status and work permit? Have you checked their literacy level?

When a foreign born person cannot speak English as well as you do, it does not mean they are illiterate, stupid or illegal. You will be surprised how many highly educated people have and still work as housekeeping staff after immigrating to the US.

+1
I used to work in a call centre - Low pay/low responsibility job.
One of the guys I worked with was a doctor who had emigrated from somewhere in Africa with his family but couldn't practice here without re-doing medical school.
You can't judge a book by it's cover.

So are you and civicfan denying that illegal immigration is an epidemic in the USA, or that hotels are well known for hiring illegals, or both?

Oh yeah, we may have an illegal Canadian or Brit, so we better not judge...

I too stay in hotels, your JW to Fairfield, I found:
1. No speakee english - correct
2. Illegal - hmm, you checked and confirmed this? In my hotel I make it a point to talk to all the employees, from the GM to the, yeah, you know, the no speakee. They work hard and pay taxes are they are employees of hotel.
I did find few hotels being cleaned by contractors and some of them are not authorized to work.

We had a cleaning lady sue and win for being unfairly fired, this was in the marrriot. Gotta luv peoples republic of california. I forgot to mention, she could not speak that well but had a great lawyer who could ;-)

The citizenship test is not easy to pass if you can't speak and/or read English. Unless they've started giving it in other languages as well, which would be a horrifying prospect.

Ah, but permanent residence is not required to have a language test, and permanent residents can work, and have to follow the laws just like the rest of us. Even the citizenship English test is just a test, you can study and pass but can still only hear 1 out of 5 sentences.

So you can't say just because they can't speak English they are illegal. You can correlate, but it is not a "proof".

I wouldn't call it an "epidemic" but I agree that it's an issue. We have certain jobs here available that need to be done and we have a pool of available labor outside our borders willing to do those jobs. There is a disconnect between the two as there are no legal mechanisms to bring those two together.

The reasons are numerous but the most important, I think, is that the current situation benefits the employers as it gives them a great leverage over those workers - the basis of them being here is outside the law so they have no legal grounds to request living wages or safe working conditions.

Agreed. Not what I was trying to say, so I apologize. There are plenty of foreigners here legally for various reasons that can't speak English.

I still doubt most of the people I come across (landscaping crews and roofing contractors) around here are here legally, however.

+1. If such an overwhelming majority were, IMO one of the rights groups would go do a survey and prove it. I have yet to see such a thing. We have no real idea what is going on out there...

Keep in mind, that they don't change their career suddenly when they marry a US citizen or their US citizen relatives get them legal status by applications. They don't suddenly learn English ,don't suddenly switch career, and don't suddenly make a lot of money.

But if you are whining about them not being here legally and accuse MOST of them being illegal and steal jobs, well, you better be very sure the individual you are accusing are in fact illegal, because otherwise you are accusing another person, with high probability of being another US citizen, something he or she is not.

Some of my friends who are legal residents or US citizens have parents that came in the middle age or near retirement age that work the landscaping and house keeping. They could understand SOME English but it is very difficult for them to carry a conversation as they aren't even educated in their own language. That's why they are stuck doing what they are doing even with the legal status.

I just dont get it. I posted references, specifically from an immigration site, that indicated the issue with hotels and illegals. Does speaking English equal a citizen? nope, but MOST citizens speak english, in fact, up until a few years ago, most immigrants tried their hardest to LEARN ENGLISH.

I know, Ive heard all the arguments. And you're right, I may well be wrong, and these people may well have green cards or the equivalent. But we are putting our heads in the sand if in striving to protect some group, we ignore the fact that there is an illegal problem in this country, and pleasant jobs, needed jobs or not, THIS is the type of industry where they work.

Provide indication to the contrary that it is not an issue, even amongst big hotel chains, and Ill listen.

Everything Ive seen indicates that it is.

And frankly, when I pay $100/night for service, I expect that everyone, cleaning maids included, can address me and hold a conversation to meet my needs for service during a stay. No "no speekee english" to get out of work. I see it at the hotel, I see it at the supermarket, etc.

Ah.... So you finally spoke your mind. You demand to be pampered when you are spending a grand $100 a night.

Now if you spend $100 a night and a blonde with French Maid uniform cleans your room, but is an illegal, will you "suddenly" forgive all wrong?

What if you spend $100 a night but a grumpy, fat, unattractive middle age woman cleans your room, but is an honest Puerto Rican (American) citizen who couldn't speak English doing her job? Will you still feel like you're ripped off?

Seriously, what are you upset about? You paid your money and got a place to sleep that's up to industrial standard, and you had lots of choices in hotels and you've already made the decision that's the most reasonable. Maybe what you demand is unrealistic, maybe you are too cheap, or both. Yes, it is an industrial wide issues where low skill labors are done by illegal these days, I get it, and I'm not denying it.

But you, being a mod, should know to separate personal political / what not from creeping into a non political thread. I'd understand if a newbie would get confused but why in the world would you bring illegal immigration issues into hotel death / hygine? then call it an epidemic and all sorts of stuff? Would you, the mod, lock the thread when you see this?

Maybe you should stay in Bed and Breakfast next time to put money where you mouth is.

OK, why dont we start with the basics. Go back and read the OP. Is what YOU are posting about relevant?

As far as your post, if I had said that I spent $397.43 per night, would it have made any difference? Nope. Anybody with much sense knows that hotel costs vary widely depending upon location, and a nice hotel might be $100 in the boonies and $500 in the center of a major city. Amazing that it even requires typing and explanation. The point is that as a paying customer, I can rightfully expect a level of service from the business and staff. If in asking a maid to change the sheets on my bed, I get a "no speeke english" response, is that service? Nope. And I DO "vote with my wallet" when it comes to businesses whose activities I dislike.

It was CivicFan and YOU that took the thread OT. It was going along just fine until then. And, frankly, nothing that you have added is constructive. Ive cited information and provided links to my point on one comment which youve turned into a page of irrelevant banter to the OP.

You also seem to not understand the difference between race and illegality. Your comment of "Now if you spend $100 a night and a blonde with French Maid uniform cleans your room, but is an illegal, will you "suddenly" forgive all wrong?" speaks volumes to your lack of understanding. What part of "ILLEGAL" do you not understand? What part of "SERVICE" don't you understand? If a legal person employed to serve my needs as a paying customer wont communicate, they are not doing a good job. If an illegal person is doing the job, well, they are ILLEGAL. That isnt very hard to comprehend. And my part calling out the service staff IS relevant, because if they cannot communicate with me, are they really going to be communicating and learning best practices from the english-speaking hotel staff? Data points to the negative. Would an English speaker do a better job? Not necessarily, but I would suggest that (1) sanitary standards are higher in the first world than third, and (2) it is much easier to get continuous improvement and training, as well as know how to properly do things if you can communicate and easily read the language written on the bottles that you are spraying. The unfortunate reality is that most who would look over a room would see it as "good enough", even if there are hidden glaring issues.

So Ill ask again, where is data or citable information proving me wrong? Reviewing this thread, I gave information about the issue, specifically in the hospitality industry. Others mentioned about the lack of cleanliness due to lack of changeouts of certain items, etc. What is found on surfaces, etc. NOT pleasant. Is this all related? YES! What you cite as "industry standard" you have no clue as to the fact of it being the case. And, unless youre a cleaning expert, dont have a clue about best practices in cleaning. But frankly, using rags that spread fecal matter and spraying a bunch of chemicals around to me is not best practice.

But back to the crux of the matter, perhaps before being a founding party to taking a thread way off topic, you should consider the level of content that you have to add, and if it is constructive to the argument. All I see is that you fail to dissociate legality from race, and so spiral the thread into an entirely irrelevant discussion. You mention lock the topic, but it was going fine until you started chiming in with all this. Perhaps all of your posts should be deleted, and the fact of police and crime scene investigation within hotels, and the cleaning practices afterwards can then be discussed fluently without distractions such as yours. Post on topic or stay out of the thread.

Yeah, people in service situations in this country should not be hired if they can't speak the language. Legal or not (although that's another good point, illegal aliens shouldn't be hired either). I can't stand dealing with people in this country who can't speak the language but are in a service capacity. Just like most tech support firms that farm out to countries where the people barely understand the language.

As far as I remember when my room is being cleaned, I am NOT in the room. If I need something, I call the front desk. Am I in the minority? Am I missing watching a J Lo alike cleaning my room??

You want bed sheets replaced, you call the front desk.

Bringing illegal immigration in this topic? Why??
