Help me pick an oil filter - Mazda SkyActive

I’d go with the Fram Endurance if they spec one for the vehicle. Great filter.

Edit: just read the post above mine that you’ve ordered a different filter. I’m sure those will serve you well.

Check the warehouse. I’m getting them out of Japan and it’s still cheaper than other places. I think it came out 13 a filter with tax and shipping. The boss I got was like 16.99 (but a larger filter).

Bad news is I got ten filters coming from Mazda swag, and it was the filter number the dealer gave me. So they’re the value ones. They want me to pay return shipping and 15 percent restock fee. So might just end up trying to sell them for what I got or dumping them in the trash.

Really disappointed the dealer gave me the wrong part number. I’m used to Toyota and just having one filter option that’s OEM in my experience. So welcome to Mazda lol. (I knew I should stay with Toyota lol)

Off to a rough start on filter numbers.

What's so bad about those Mazda OEM filters? Mazda wouldn't sell them as OEM through the dealerships if they weren't decent enough filters.

What I understand is two filter types can be used, both are 'Honda' filter style, either 6607 or 7317, latter is a bit taller, both have similar bypass pressure and both will fit and work just fine.
I just did oil change on '22 cx-30 yesterday and used Mazda WPE filter. Filter that came off and was installed by last shop was Motorcraft FL-816, it's taller than Mazda filter. I'd use other than Mazda filter but the car is still under warranty and it's getting shipped to East coast on Wed, it belongs to extended family member.
I don't understand chasing after Roki filters, there are many filters on the market that are not any worse or even better and often cheaper.

Not a reply to your oil filter question, but I am considering a Mazda CX-5 non turbo for my wife. She currently drives an Acura RDX with the 3.5 V6, with plenty of pep. It seems to me that a 2.5 4 cylinder in a mid-sized SUV is undersized. Does yours feel underpowered?
The NA 2.5 is plenty adequate for the CX-5.

I think people like OEM, and if you can get the ones made in Japan, most people "feel" like its better than a product made in Mexico.

But at least we have ton of choices.

Pep is much better with the turbo. Fairly underwhelming without the turbo engine.

I have a CX 5 with a turbo and a 2018 3 with a NA motor. I traded in a 2016 CX 5 NA for the turbo CX 5 so I have a fair amount of experience with both motors. Yes, the turbo has more grunt than the NA's, but the NA's are more than adequate (and get far better fuel mileage). When passing a semi going 65 mph or so on a two lane road (two lanes often have 70 and 75 mph limits out west) with the NA motor I just make sure I give myself a little more room, but it's easily and safely doable.

So, was at my local Mazda dealership this morning to get a key fob programmed for my 2023 Mazda 3. I chatted with the parts guy for a bit. The only thing he had behind the counter was the MV filter. That’s it. When I got my wife’s CX-5 in November they had both the MV and the Roki filter. Funny thing is the price is still $9! So, purely a profit reason. They save a few dollars per oil change which is probably big money in the long run for them. I didn’t buy any. For $9, probably better choices.

My 23 CX-30 base engine I used Purolator One PL14612 rated 15k local Menards at less 8$ for 5k run replaced it every other oil change.

Must be an internet cult following thing with those Roki filters.

Japanese vehicle… Japan made oil filter to go along with it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I personally absolutely HATE it when manufacturers release a product with high quality original standards but then, years down the road, decide to start cutting corners for whatever reason 🤨 😤 🤦🏻‍♂️

I would NEVER use a “value line” product when an original quality unit is available.

When the Skyactiv engines came out, Mazda offered and sold us the original, made in Japan oil filters.

Then for some reason then switched to the current Thailand made filter (I used them for a few oil changes because nothing else was available.

Then WIX came out with a Skyactiv engine specific oil filter model. I tried it. Didn’t like the fact that it’s way smaller than the original. 😒

When the Japanese Roki oil filters finally started popping up online again, I bought a box to last me several years and now happily use the nice, high quality Made in Japan oil filter for my Made in Japan Engine. 🤓

I’ve cut open each and every filter over the years. The Roki looks to be the best quality. 🤷🏻‍♂️
