I only go to those places for the annual inspection sticker required in Texas. I took my '04 Accord 2.4l in a few years back and talked oil with the manager while the car was being inspected. He flat out told me that 5W20 oil would kill the engine. I told him that in that case I was fine since I used 0W20

I always love the switch-the-dipstick trick these places pull. Showing a customer the oil dipstick and telling them its the transmission fluid, and since it's brown it needs changed.
Makes me glad my girlfriend changes her own oil. They push so much [censored] over on females.

OK synthetic oil is a good thing for your motor but for myself unless it's an emergency one doesn't know who makes the oil filter. When I went the oil filter had no name on the can. Who made it???? Gas treatmentand a new battery you can do it yourself so you know it's done right. Tires I'd just wear them out and get a new set of 4 all around so skip there offer for that item. Remember part ofthe price is to rent their service bay to do the job. The only other item I'd have them do is change the air filter.

Previously, I was in the "not worth the hassle to change yourself" crowd, but after several negative experiences with my jiffylube, I changed my tune.
On one occassion, the kid cross threaded the oil fill cap. Fortunately, he didn't torque it down, just gave it a spin and left it.
On another occassion, I brought my car to jiffylub for a coolant exchange. I figured this was a good idea since they have a machine that will suck out all the old fluid. When I got home, I noticed that the fluid in the overflow resevoir was a sickly green and full of scale. The guy obviously put somebody else's crud in my overlow. I turkey basted it all out., but that was the last straw for me.

If you are forced to use these places, at a minimum, do the following before you leave the lot:
1) Check that the oil fill cap is on properly
2) Check for leaks by looking under the body
3) Check the dipstick
4) Check that a new filter was installed

Around here, Firestone runs a coupon in every paper. 5 quarts of Kendall "Semi Synthetic", a filter and a rotation for $24.99.
I'd call that worth it.

The quick lubes nationally average about $15 per car over whatever the going rate for their oil change is per customer.
If you have to go this type of place, when you walk-in, tell them that you are here for oil change and oil change only. Specifically state that you never fall for UPSELL, so do not try. Use the word "upsell". That is the code word to the quick lube place.
Of course, watch them work on the car if you can and verify before driving away.

The one time I had to take a company car to Iffy Lube a simple "No." turned back the one legitimate upsell they suggested, air filter and ATF were both serviceable but only just. The local Firestone is another story. They're a full shop so that just means they're ready to upsell you on so much more. The breaking point was when I took the same company car to them for tires the check-list came back with recommendations for at least four different things - ATF, coolant, cabin air, engine oil - that I had literally changed the day before. If he had even looked at the cabin air filter he would have seen it was pristine. Now I make sure when I drop it off to give a stern "and don't screw around looking for stuff to fix...JUST TIRES" before leaving.
