Engine Start/Stop Vehicles

What’s wrong with push button start?

Even my Tundra has the equivalent. It cranks until it starts whether I hold the key or not. It’s an auto system, like push button, not like I’m holding the key and energizing a hot lead to the solenoid.

You want reliable?

Floor start. A button on the floor connects the battery directly to the starter. No solenoid. Battery voltage applied directly to the windings of the starter motor.

Nothing to break or fail.

Meh, not as reliable as the hand crank.

I think the OP needs to get out more often. These systems have been around for a long time now.
You are correct in saying that. I DON'T get out much, except to Dr. appts., grocery shopping, or to visit my cousin. You see, where I live the population is about 300 +/-. Oh, and on a few occasions I visit my dad (2 miles away), or my only friend (3.5 miles away).
And, I'm VERY HAPPY with my living conditions.
Oh, and one more thing, I HAVE been knowing about these engines for A LONG TIME! This morning was me getting my cherry popped!

I've been around and driven quite a few vehicles that have it. None have experienced reliability issues, but I personally don't like it just from a drivability standpoint. Some manufacturers implement it better than others, but there seems to be a very apparent stumble or hesitation with a lot of them when accelerating from a stop. This is more obvious with vehicles that have a hint of turbo lag on initial throttle tip-in.

I do like the floor starters lol those are extra old school. Usually the button goes bad on the units or in one case we had a customer spill Mtn Dew on one which is understandable why it would go bad then lol. I didn’t know yours was the equivalent.

With everything going through some sort of body control or similar module, a push button start is no less reliable than a traditional key. They switch on the key just tells the ECM to start the car, just like the button does these days.
Yeah but the button wears out faster after use. Much faster than an ignition would. The longest I’ve ever seen one last is 11 years till it had to be replaced.

After I left WM this morning I stopped at McDonald's to get me a $1 large iced tea. While waiting in one of the 2 drive thru lanes there was a GMC SUV in the lane next to me. This was the 1st vehicle I have ever seen/heard with that engine start/stop gizmo. I sure hope the starter has been built accordingly to withstand all of the starting it will be put through.

Simple. Don’t drink and drive. Skip the iced tea drive thru and the Mountain Dew. Save your starters!

I'd think the pushbutton would be a lot easier to replace than a switch attached to a lock cylinder.
Most keyswitch replacements include some level of tearing into the column to get to the switch.
That depends the age of the car. Most of the Toyota and Lexus I have done are complicated you have to worry about popping all of the plastic pieces off and worry about breaking those.

The most rediculous option I've ever seen on newer vehicles by far.
