Apple is a great piece of business history. By 1995 it was on brink of extinction - this time for real. There were several strategic options for the board. One was this guy with a funny name of Jean-Louis Gassee who had what seemed to be the best replacement for the aging Mac OS (Classic). He wanted $200 for his BeOS. Apple was unwilling to offer any more than $125 million. Apple's board of directors decided NeXTSTEP was a better choice and purchased NeXT in 1996 for $429 million, bringing back Apple co-founder Steve Jobs - he cleverly stipulated that. Next was not selling well despite real polish and robust feature set. But by that time, Apple was a religion and bringing in the living god Jobs proved to be the wise move.
It's a shame, as BeOS was light years ahead of anything then.
And may be still is.. That thing had its own personality.

Man, somebody else who remember BeOS! I have a copy of it around here somewhere. I really liked it.
OS have not been a big bottleneck today as was yesteryear.
It used to eat up most of your processing power, but now it is nothing significant. So are the rest of the industry who caught up with faster hard drives, faster CPU, bigger RAM, faster network.
It is also now very expensive to "think different", as volume is everything. So in the end it is really down to the peripherals and pretty graphics that differentiate one well designed OS from the other. 80% of the users don't use more than 10% of all features and it is again the "volume" that matters. Apple is making huge money from the other 20% that want something nicer.
Very soon these petty arguments will no longer matter. Like SCSI vs IDE (PATA) or CISC vs RISC, something new will come along and render them obsolete and the future is unified standard and architecture.
Easy to use is in the eyes of the beholders.

I don't like Apple because people like you.
Honestly, their products are not bad… I just really, really hate the cult following with Apple. My PC’s have been extremely reliable. It just seems people need to justify the costs of the Apple products, I suppose, so they chose to hate on PC. I hardly ever see PC people make topics like this, justifying why PC’s are better than Apple. Only Apple people doing it against the PC. It is a weird “mine is bigger than yours” trend or something.
I never wanted to buy an iPad… The day Amazon announced the Kindle Fire, I preordered mine. To me, getting away from the Apple monopoly is a plus. I am sure Apple will sue Amazon now, like they do everybody else who gets in their way. Pathetic. Let your products compete, not lawyers. I do not like how Apple does business. They sue everybody.
BTW, I own an iTouch… And it’s nice I suppose. I hate all the software Apple like to install on the computer to run it, though.

Back in those days Apple was pretty close with Adobe Software and other software companies involved in page layout, photo editing, computer graphics, etc. Things seem different today. A while back when Steve Jobs was still alive he really lit into Adobe Software. I was surprised.
Apple is so much into mobile computing and new lifestyle stuff that I think they may have forgotten about the computer graphics people who used to overwhelmingly use Apple Computers. Today you certainly can use cheaper Windows computers to do computer graphics. I used to get catalogs in the mail all the time from MacMall and another one (can't remember the name). I was stunned one day when one of those started to advertise Windows workstations for computer graphics work. That was years ago and I realized right then that things were starting to change. I know for an honest fact that I can get better printing from my Windows 7 computer than my iMac. Not so many years ago that would have been unthinkable.

lol, didn't mean to start a urinate on Vista war. Vista SP2 patched is a decent system. Sure, it boots slower than XP but the benefits of a reworked network stack are more beneficial than the extra boot time.
Win7 is better no doubt. And it supports SD drives. Vroom Vroom!

It's called the silent majority. Like politics, the ones who carry on and make utter fools of themselves are the ones that get all the attention. The other 80% just sit along silently, surfing the web on their Macbook.
Over 250,000,000 iOS devices have been sold. Apple holds nearly 25% of the home computing market. Here's another great statistic... 85% of Mac owners also own a PC. Hardly a monopoly and hardly a "cult following" if 85% of the cult isn't drinking the kool-aid. The number of people who are Mac-exclusive is tiny compared to PC-exclusive crowd.
If you want to see a wonderful example of the PC-centric side, go take a visit too Maximum PC's forums and look at the response to Future's (Max PC's publisher) recent announcement that Max PC will be available in the IOS newsstand. Of course, you'll find no Apple hate there, just a group of enthusiasts patiently wishing for Future to release something for their Android and Windows Mobile device. Riiiiiiiight

The biggest problem with Vista is its inability to quickly and efficiently network. This is an issue on a self-built vista desktop as well as a Sony vista laptop I had.

Apple is selling a lot of iPads, iPhones, and various other consumer electronics items. No question about that. But Apple does not have 25% of the home computing market. In the world as a whole that figure for Apple is more like 5% and in the USA about 15%. That is the best anybody can determine because Apple is kind of tight with its sales figures. I don't know about right now but not too long ago the sale of Mac desktop computers had actually declined.
Personally I have no use for an iPad. I have no use for any computer when I am on some windy mountain ridge taking photographs. I will work on the photographs on my desktop computer when I get home. I will not attempt photo editing in my hotel room. I tend to be kind of tired when I finally get back to the hotel room. A lot of professional photographers no longer even work on their photographs. They sell whatever ones are good. My brother has been to more than 100 countries and he sells his photographs.
I don't hate Apple or Microsoft or any other corporation or person. Like I said above, I will use whatever equipment and software works for ME. If that is Apple, I will use Apple. If it is Microsoft, I will use Microsoft.

It seems like people who use Windows realize that computers are just computers and the hot products of today will be junk in the not so distant future.
Instead of rushing out and standing in line to buy whatever the most recent hot new product is, I think I will prefer to wait.
