I have had that experience installing Linux on a few computers but used the text mode and it installed just fine.

In your case with a bad hard drive you are out of luck. Below is a link for text install of Ubuntu for future reference.

No, just some computers don't like the GUI install for some reason?

Once installed to the hard drive, I never had any issues. Problem was getting it installed.

No hard drive is required.

You may want to try Pendrive Linux and try to boot off of a Thumb Drive.

I carry a 4 gig thumb drive with Linux Mint installed and have it setup with my email stuff, etc.

Just boot off of the Thumb Drive.

You can create a persistent Thumb Drive - saves your changes and works like charm.

Give that a try on your old laptop.
