Dealer powertrain warranty for life?

read the fine print; frequently the dealer requires that you do ALL maintenance with them, and don't miss any single item. for people that pay the dealer to do the work anyway, might as well.

Tyler Kelly Chevrolet Lewiston Idaho is the dealer. It's called "Everdrive". I searched the net and found a few other dealers with this Everdrive warranty. The warranty is a third party company I believe perhaps Portfolio? They advertise the warranty as "free" with every car under 75,000 miles. I'm sure the cost was added into every car before hand. I asked if I could have money off the truck if I didn't want the warranty they said no because it was "free". The truck is a 2011 Silverado work truck 2 wheel drive base model. It had "5,500" miles on it when I bought it in March. I did some research it was a private local owner older guy who didn't drive much, very clean. I paid $12,700, which was a little below KBB at the time.

The contracts come from some shady central house that both knows how to write them so the dealer can welch out of paying, and also tells them how to market such items. Dealers go to dealer trade shows for new stuff, they only have to reinvent their cons every 5-10 years as that's how often people come in. Read the back pages of "Automotive News" for the wholesale come-ons. They still have those stupid keys you get in the mail that "might fit a new dodge viper".

Look for the warranty to only cover "lubricated parts" which would leave you in the lurch if there's a wiring issue, most computer codes, EVAP issues, entertainment center, rust issues, etc.

Honestly look at how your current car is falling apart and expect the next one to perform similarly.

I love listening to people brag about the "Free Lifetime Warranty" or however they word their free crap warranties their dealer gave them. Yea right.......... Like they were some kind of VIP customer. Read the fine print.

it's only free until you must pay for the required scheduled maintenance. The dealer probably makes enough off that to cover the rare times the engine actually fails.....

If you have recurring issues, they will find a way to void your warranty.

I had an MP3 player that was designed poorly fifteen years ago. I returned it to The Bay three times under warranty before they told me to pound sand.
I bought a Sony TV that stopped working in six months. Sony sent me a scratched up refurb to replace it. When I complained, they reluctantly sent me a new one and ambiguously told me that they were washing their hands of me.

If they end up on the losing end of the warranty, they will try to shake you off. Even a manufacturer's warranty on a brand new product.

We have two other cars that I've always done the oil changes, air filters, cabin filters, etc. I'm not a mechanic by any means. This truck was the first time I had experienced this lifetime warranty thing. I'll just forget it and do my own maintenance, I think it'll end up being a huge hassle anyways. It seems more and more dealers are doing this lifetime warranty thing.

It's a third party warranty? Many of those end up in FBI raids and prison sentences. It's a long term fly-by-night operation. They just do whatever they want until they either declare bankruptcy or go to prison. Executive paychecks keep coming without fail until the end.

They're going to drop people on their head as much as possible and then run away.

My wife got this kind of warranty "for free" on her NEW Crosstrek. I read the Warranty and it doesn't cover "gradual normal wear out and loss of compression and performance". There is no requirement for the DEALER to perform maintenance - but factory recommended maintenance must be performed in a timely manner by someone using facory or equivalent parts.. Likely not worth much but who knows. I dont recall the underwriter or Guarantor. The local NISSAN manager said he is honoring 3rd party service contracts with out much issure - whereas NISSAN has been a pain getting repair approval. So who knows. I would re-read it and maybe call the contract issuer and see wnat they say about OCI. I biet if you keep records and receipts a claim should be .... No Hay Problema!
PS: I was looking into an extended service contract for my 2014 Rogue powertrain. I read the fine print of a "sample" contract buried on their back page and it didnt cover timing chain or TC tensioners and guides! Then Minimal stuff in the trans case, a purportedly top rated vehicle contract issuer. DELTA AUTO PROTECT. Booo! Forget that! Good luck with the truck! Is it the 4.3 torque monster?

That part sounded odd.

It's not just the oil/filter changes that you'll have to keep up on, it's all of the other "REQUIRED MAINTENANCE" that the vehicle owner's manual calls for or the dealer calls for in order to keep the LIFETIME POWERTRAIN WARRANTY.

DON'T BE FOOLED!

I get tires for life.I buy Yokohama tires and if I get a hole anywhere they replace for free for one full year. Never had tires last a year though either. On my fourth set now

I have a 370Z in the shop right now - it has one of these "powertrain for life" warranties. The rear timing cover gaskets have failed (confirmed via a manual oil pressure test). An estimate has been sent to the company for approval and they are sending an on-site inspector. I will update when we find out more...

I suspect many of these sorts of warranties will not pay more than the retail value of the car. I.E. if you keep the car for 20 years and it's worth $500, they are not going to do a $3500 engine repair.

Their exposure is limited in all sorts of ways, to their, not your benefit.

If one has to have a vehicle serviced by the dealership instead of DIY, then there really is no appreciable value to these "free" warranties.

The same is true for many of the after market paid extended warranty programs.

The contract does day that the repair can't exceed the nada value, so in theory if I kept the truck forever the warranty would be worthless because it wouldn't cover an engine or tranny. The warranty provider is "portfolio", the internet reviews are pretty bad.

A guy I work with had a DVD player/ car stereo thing installed at a shop, and he "paid the guy an extra $50 so it would play movies on the screen while driving." Didn't have the heart to tell him that it was probably easier to wire up that way. He's strutting around like king of the world.

Well the good news is it looks like you got a good deal on the truck. Enjoy but as I'm sure you've already picked up on. Do the easy maintenance yourself and find a honest shop to do more complicated maintenance locally.

Dealer I bought my Caliber from had that "lifetime Powertrain warranty!" I asked them "so I have to do all my maintenance stuff here?" And they replied "yes!" Naturally. I've never stepped foot back on that dealership... Caliber is at almost 95k miles now. Going to get passed down to my brother in law so we can buy a Pacifica or a Grand Caravan.
