I had my fall maintenance done on my 19 Silverado 1500 this morning at my dealership. I had them do the oil change and tire rotation nothing crazy. All went well with the normal 45 minute or so wait. The service manager says your good to go I went and paid my bill and it ended up being $165.00. I used to get the owners club discount but didn't this time they said they dont offer it anymore. What are you going to do its already done right? so I paid the bill. In the process of paying the lube tech comes through the door and starts ripping the guy in the back room saying he isn't doing oil changes like this for $14.00 an hour anymore. He then started complaining about how many people was still waiting for oil changes so on and so on. Well apparently the dealership has changed hands this year so far to say the least I am not impressed. This leads me to wonder about my lifetime powertrain warranty I had through the dealer if it is even still valid or not because I know that show dealerships get out of it. Its sad to see dealerships you have went to for a long time go down hill.

The dealer likely used the cheapest Group I bulk oil they could find on the open market that week, and had some underpaid frustrated person doing the oil change / tire rotation. Dealership owners nowadays think of the dealership they own as a cash cow that needs to be milked infinitely. These kind of oil changes for $165 looks like that. I've stopped going to dealers for oil changes. It was never a good value for me.

Yes, that's what I do. DIY oil change using Ramps. 20 minutes start to finish.
It's not a money issue, it's a time issue. 20 minutes if I do it myself, versus a few hours to drive somewhere and wait for them to do it, and then drive back home.

We have bought three new cars from our local Toyota dealership in the last three years and one of the things that I liked was their free lifetime state inspections.

Well, apparently the dealership changed hands and they aren't honoring that any more. When questioned about it they will do the inspection but fail the car.

I had this happen to me and I had the car inspected at an independent garage half an hour later and it passed without issues.

It's all about the Benjamins. Oil changes/tire rotations at a dealership are a loss leader for them. They want to upsell. May not be able to for a brand new car, but soon.....

$165 for an oil change and tire roatation though, I imagine they're making money. Especially paying the kid $14 an hour.

I assume since I can do a full synthetic oil / filter change for less than $20, what is it costing a dealership for materials?

The turnover rate on the oil change/lube rack has always been high and in todays society it only gotten worse. The last time anyone touched anything of mine was a "free" oil change on my 2018 Silverado when it was still new and a lease. The next OC was done by me where I took the original oil filter off of it.

My son went to a quick lube in a pinch and paid that much for a so called “synthetic” oil change. All the sudden hpl and Schaeffers is justifiable. Although I understand the need for some to use them.

Here's my experience in PA. Everyone disguises the out the door state inspection price. For 10 years I've used a "$29.95" coupon which I know is $42 out the door. Today, the coupon was $49.95 and $67 out the door.

I don't know about anyone else, but with my cars being 2006, 2007, 2011, I am elated when I get word they passed.

The 2007 failed for the first time this year, after 17 consecutive years. BMW. Interestingly the dealer would charge me $38 for the inspection and I'd get a free loaner. They ended that in 2021 during the pandemic (for me with an old car).

It's a game, free safety with paid emissions, exempt emissions, blah blah blah. My wife's dealer was free safety and it was in the $55 range when as I said the others were $42. So in PA one needs to know the out the door price--they add sticker fees, shop fees, any fee they can think of.

But again, with my cars being old, I am elated when they are good for another year. I got word an hour ago the 2006 Lexus passed....wooooohoooo :ROFLMAO:

Dealers know they are losing business to independent service providers. There are deals out there, but you must look or ask for them.
BMW has been promoting their oil change package. Only for cars with 60k miles or 5 years old. Prepay $225 and you get unlimited oil changes for 3 years, based on the BMW service monitor on the car...depends on the car, but that is around 10k miles or 1 year, whichever occurs first. I know a few friends that purchased this...but due to not driving much, they only get one oil change per year...or they change it at 5k themselves (and not reset the monitor), and then have the dealer do it at 10k.
