Considering 2020 Dodge/Ram 2500 gasser

Well having had an 89 GMC 1 ton 454 TBI, Turbo 400 and 4.10 I can tell you my current truck doubled the highway and towing (towing almost double the weight) MPG of that old truck and it tows circles around that thing. If you are buying a gas 3/4 ton or better MPG is not on your list. Maybe for fleet guys but not guys like me.

With the aluminum Ford and its 7.3 liter godzilla engine and GMs new 6.6 gas engine, it is hard to see myself buying a gas ram. Cummins ram? Sure.

cummins resale value is the best period full stop but you’d have to do the numbers and see if you can justify it over the gas with incentives

Ford 2020 7.3L Long bed 4x4 with AT tires 3.55 cogs- 10 spd
MPG since new including the break in period- towing-excessive idling because of the CV19 times- drive ins-daily
A bunch of in town driving and no care to extract mpg. Icy here- much defrost time too.
Since new is this average- not for a tank but the whole ordeal since new
I had a few easy hwy runs with amazing mpg- when I can get to Florida which I do the 900 + miles straight we shall see.
I just see I took trip#2- the extra 200 miles is the same overall mpg for the whole over 3400 miles

I hope they use it better than my Rubicon … have had 4.10 gears in several vehicles and expected lower RPM’s at 70 mph … there is lots of back and forth between 7th and 8th around 65 mph …

Hate rustling the howler monkeys … but our L83/6L80e is a more enjoyable powertrain (yet I love the Jeep)
That's interesting its like that in the Jeep. I have the 3.92 gears in my 1500 and I feel like the RPM is right around 2000 at 70 and it takes a significant hill to make it downshift. I know I've touched 20mpg a few times.

Yup, ours is the same way.

Not surprising that the V8 can hold higher gears better/longer than a V6. Chrysler has never been shy of using low ratio final drives. Where GM will put 3.08's in a 1500 truck/SUV???

6.4 requires expensive oil changes, look up the Pennzoil 0w-40/MS-12633.

6.4 is not completely immune to the cam/lifter issue either.

Current 2500 is also still a 4th gen with updates; all new 5th gen comes out next year.

At least on paper, in this space, the new Ford 7.3 is king.

I wondered about that. Every 6.4 I’ve heard so far has had very vocal lifters. Related? No idea.

I agree on the 7.3 Godzilla. Apparently Ford is going to be making a NA hotrod version of this much like the voodoo V8.

To be fair, a 2500 6.4 is quite a bit less expensive than a comparable F-250 with the 7.3 gas.

In today's market, this truck still sells for $4-$5K off msrp, so $52K for a gas 3/4 ton that is mildly optioned is quite good. I don't think you can touch a comparable F-250 unless you spend high $50's/low $60's.

Maybe the Dodge makes up for it’s initial savings with the expensive oil changes? Lol.

Never really looked into the spec, but I do like how Dodge gets it. Big engine that’ll likely be stressed should get something other than a 0w20. Lol

My 2015 F150 2wd gets 21 to 23+ mpgs with the driving I do. If drive the wife's 2018 4 X4 F350 with the same driving gets 12 to 14 mpgs. The F35 is much better towing the daughters and her Horsies around as well as picking up hay and grains etc. If a heavier truck is needed it is needed.

Thanks for all the feedback!

With local small town dealer only having diesels, we shopped long distance.

Strange experience!

We put a deposit on a vehicle today with a large dealer in Phoenix.

Sounds like it's all locked in and should be delivered around New Years.

I opine that Ram 2500 gassers in the Tradesman trim seem to be the least expensive truck on the lot right now.

Hopefully, this one will be reliable!

I almost pulled the trigger on a 2020 tradesman CTD for $50k brand new. Seems like a good deal if you’re not into excessive fancy stuff.

Shipping took a bit longer that expected, but considering the Christmas and New Years holidays, it's understandable.

I ended up a Tradesman with the Power Wagon option.

I really like it.

The wife had named it the Taco Wagon, because it was Hecho en Mexico.
