There is 188 million acres of National Forest in the USA. What you probably saw was some Fire Smart activities to lower fire risk around assets such as towns, areas were tourist congregate, and perhaps a corridor along highways. In the national and state parks that haven't burned, you see piles of dead dry wood piled up in small piles. I asked a ranger about it and he said they burn them in the winter snow season. These forests have not been burned in a long time. Good forest mgmt.
Canada has almost 1 billion acres of forest. Prescribed burns are common in National parks. Fire breaks are also common around communities. Hot dry conditions are present across much of North America and this is officially the worst year on record for wildfires in Canada. Over 19,000 square miles of forest has already burned and summer has not even started.
Over half the fires are caused by lightening strikes and the rest are caused by human activities. Bears don’t play with matches.
