Brand loyalty vs whatever is on sale = vote

I do both. I wait for Mobil EP to be on sale and then I buy it. Usually the sale happens twice a year, which is perfect. Since my OCI is once a year I feel that I am limited with my oil choice.

in my car, i am not brand loyal. my stash is all synthetic, though. i have 10 oil changes worth, and almost all of it was bought on sale/rebate.

in my vintage vespas, i am brand loyal. i use amsoil dominator or motul 710 in my gas. in my crank cases, i use valvoline SAE30 non-detergent.

What ever is on sale . I can't see much difference between different brands of equal market levels. Though they are exceptions.

GREAT bringing back this thread instead of starting a new one!

Never saw it last year so my vote is whatever is on sale of name brands that I know of.

Right now the $1.99 quart Chevron no limit is the oil of choice. When QS was $8 per 5qt jug at Wal-Mart stocked up with those (though I HATE the old jugs so I bought a new one and transfer the old jugs to the new one after using it).

Works for me and the many motors that have well over 200k over the decades. The Corolla this time next year will be around 210-220,000 miles on what ever is on sale.

Still runs like new.

Take care, Bill

I pick the oil I want but plan ahead and wait for it to go on sale.

We don't see anything $1.99/qt here. Heck, $5/qt is probably something to get excited about. No price makes me look at something completely unsuitable that's never been on my "short list".

Not loyal to either brand or price....loyal to time and convinience.

If I have the 'time' to take advantage of a sale or a deal on an oil change, I will, but most of the time it comes down to getting what I can at the exact moment I decide to get an oil change.

I thought I was loyal to a particular brand.

Then one day I happened into an unfamiliar Walmart and spotted 5 quart jugs of Quaker State 5w20 and 5w30 for $5.99.

I stopped caring so much about brands at that point.

I was really loyal to Pennzoil Platinum when it was nearly free with rebates. I've just become really loyal to Valvoline Synpower at $1.90/qt (but I still have quite a bit of PP to work through).

Generally, I look for deals on a group III synthetic or use MC5W20. Getting the synthetics for even cheaper than the MC, I've been going with those for a while. If I thought there would be a huge performance difference, I wouldn't care about the cost--but I don't.

We used to be dedicated Amsoil customers for decades. Great stuff.

But modern oil has come a long way.

Now we shop for almost any synthetic on sale, usually the oil and filter packages at AZ, etc.

Most any modern synthetic will exceed the needs of almost any user.

I am willing to try different brands of oil but I am not willing to try some oddball brand I have never heard of. Even if the strange brand of oil I have never heard of is on sale for a very good price I will not use it if I never heard of it before.

I figure brands like Pennzoil, Valvoline, Quaker State, Castrol, Motorcraft, etc., are probably reasonably close in performance. People try to find out at this website (with VOAs and UOAs) which brand is the best.

But if I come across some 'house brand' motor oil I am much less willing to buy it-regardless of price. For example, NAPA motor oil is a 'house brand.' According to what I have been able to find out it is a decent quality oil made by the same people who make Valvoline but does not have as strong of an additive package. I know something about NAPA oil so I am willing to use it. But remember, it apparently does not have as strong of an additive package.

In general I feel it is safer to stick to name brands.

I use whatever is the cheapest. I don't own any stock of any of the major brands so why should I be loyal? The cheapest oil I've ever used in my car in 5k oci's was Napa dino and my car ran just fine.

I use whatever synthetic 0W-20 or 5W-20 oil is on sale. If I had a brand loyalty, I would use 0W-20 Valvoline Synpower because of the 300,000-mile engine warranty.

For the most part brand loyal but will use a sub if my usual brew is out my last oc in the Trailblazer WM was out of 5-30 PYB so i picked up a 5qt jug and 2qt botttles of QS green bottle used to be a loyal Valvoline white bottle user don't remember why i changed, sales will not change my pattern unless one of my usual happens to be the one on sale.
