I am willing to try different brands of oil but I am not willing to try some oddball brand I have never heard of. Even if the strange brand of oil I have never heard of is on sale for a very good price I will not use it if I never heard of it before.
I figure brands like Pennzoil, Valvoline, Quaker State, Castrol, Motorcraft, etc., are probably reasonably close in performance. People try to find out at this website (with VOAs and UOAs) which brand is the best.
But if I come across some 'house brand' motor oil I am much less willing to buy it-regardless of price. For example, NAPA motor oil is a 'house brand.' According to what I have been able to find out it is a decent quality oil made by the same people who make Valvoline but does not have as strong of an additive package. I know something about NAPA oil so I am willing to use it. But remember, it apparently does not have as strong of an additive package.
In general I feel it is safer to stick to name brands.
