Brand loyalty vs whatever is on sale = vote

I go for sales if the sales price is not in the form of stupid mail in rebtes and if the price is drasticly less then my brand like AAP's bogo sales on PP and or when PP is $18 or less for a five quart jug etc.............The only reason I do not run Redline as my only oil is due to price so everything else is a comprimise. I still think M1 makes the best product on the retail shelfs though and when the price difference is only a $1-$3 I still go for M1!

Same here.

That's a difficult choice. Walmart has a limited selection but their prices are as good as auto parts stores sale prices around here. Only good deals I've found are Pep Boy's oil & filter specials but there's never a good one at oil change time.

I won't get another stash because I wanted to change brands and grade before the last stash was used up and I can always find something at walmart that fits my application.

Brand loyalty

Brand loyal for the most part. The Jetta saw only M1 until I switched to RP 5W40 (now on third OCI). I was happy with M1 but curious to see if RP offered anything I wasn't getting from M1. IMO, the RP is a touch better so I will likely stay with it for the duration. Like others here I kinda enjoy giving it fresh oil (she LOVES fresh oil) so I stick to 5K though I know the oil still has life in it. If the car runs so much smoother on a fresh change there must be something that the UOA doesn't reflect.

Wife's Eclipse was switched from M1 to GC at the same time and it seems quite happy with the GC. Will likely stay there as well though I may move her to RP as well when the GC (mine, not the brand) is gone. We'll see. That's more than a year away.

Frankly I'm surprised so many are brand loyal and pay no attention to price.

I buy my favored brands on sale and stock up...no conflict with those two concepts at all.

Are all of our garages so full that we dont have room for a case or two of oil bought at a good price? I thought more of you would have a stash of favored oil.

Brand loyalty is a huge thing. If something works for most people, why change it I suppose.

I would normally say that worked back in the 70's or whatever. Back then you either bought the service station offering ..or probably PZ or QS. Then you were really distinctive if you bought Valvoline.

..but I have a hard time buying it now. Especially with our informed peer group here.

I find most oils, both conventional and (many) synthetics, to be somewhat generic. There's not much distinction between them.

The other day I was talking to my cars and informed them I was changing brands of oil. You would have thought I threatened to send them to the scrape yard. The Fusions lights flickered off and on while the Focus little wippers lurched back in forth as if it's little tranny were heart broken. Both of their horns beeped a bit, it was so sad.Yes breathern cars do have feelings and are human to, so be careful how you switch oil back in forth before talking it over with your cars.

I'm not brand loyal, but I am category loyal.

I stick with well known name brands or house brands made by known/respected manufacturers (eg. a house brand made by SOPUS for example).

haha +1

It really amazes me with all the anal discussions of oils, UOA's, filters, synthetics, etc., etc., so many people are running what ever they can get cheap. Now I am not one to spend money I don't think I have to, but pages ago I reported sticking to YB Pennzoil for maybe longer than some of you have lived. I am just not going with with whatever Wal*Mart has cheap.

I see it differently.

What amazes me is that after all those discussions there are still people that think there is a measurable difference in wear between PZYB, Havoline, GTX and any other name brand dino oil. Before I found BITOG and spent hundreds and I fear thousands of hours reading, I would only use Mobil 1 for 3k OCIs. Now I use decent dino at around 5k miles as directed by the OLM. Data is most persuasive in changing my maintenance habits. My UOAs are no worse now than before.

I would buy depending on price.

Maybe it will be different when I'm a little older and have the cash flow to be brand loyal versus saving a few bucks now.

Have too many cars but the newer ones I dont pile miles on get once a year change with Amsoil.

The daily drivers get three oil changes a year since I put so many miles on them( over 30K each per year) so they get Amsoil for the winter 5-6 month change and whatever Grp 3 syn I have in my stash for the other 2 changes. Stash includes PP Plat, QS TQ PWR, Advanced, HP and Mobil1 and Edge. I think I have about 70+ gallons of oil reserve:)

For the other drivetrain is all Amsoil ATF, MTF, Gear Lubes, Grease, PS Fluid etc
