How come redline, amsoil and other "boutique" oil companies don't make a dino oil?
You would think if they did they would make a lot more money , as long as they advertise it right

Curious to see what people have to say. Was wondering this today

Their synthetics is what sets them apart. They gain most of their business from high additve packages and high dollor basestocks. This isn't usually found in Dino oil. Very little sets each dino apart that set on the shelf at any auto parts store

To the koolaid drinkers it would lower their mindset towards the company.

Look at what some people think of Amsoil and their EXCELLENT XL oils (IMO their best oils).

They get bashed since its group III.

Small blenders could never gain a competitive advantage with a low end product. They could never compete with the majors on price, availability, etc. and there's few ways they differentiate their products with a low-cost dino.

Royal Purple does do a break in oil, though.

I thought Schaeffer's only offered synthetic and synthetic blends.

Why would I seek out Amsoil as a dino oil provider when I can buy a quart of Exxon's latest Dino blend for $1.75 at most off the shelf at any store?

I prefer Amsoil for it's 100% synthetic oil line and I'll pay the 8.10 a quart for it given my applications and their needs.
If I want dino, I'll buy something else and prefferably whatever is on sale.
If I want Group III oils, I'll buy Mobil 1 for $22.50 for a 5 quart jug at Wal-Mart.

I agree, Amsoil XLM 5W-20 out-performs their own ASM 0W-20.

According to the old RL site "We do not make a motor oil to hit a certain price point; we concentrate only on making the best oil possible."

Please explain this in detail. I would love to see the evidence of this conclusion. Thanks!

TO the OP question. Amsoil does make group III oils and a HDEO blend.

While I'd say that they aren't the best, they're very underrated. I want to get around to running one of them for a year/12-15k to see how it would match up. I think it will do fine. It may not do it for everyone over 1 year, but I don't think 12k-15k a year will be too much of a challenge. They have to over blend the stuff to throw out some blind 7500/6month deal.

ASM 0W-20 I'm sure is a fine lomg drain oil, but the less expensive XLM 5W-20 is lighter at all typical start-up temperatures. Sorry I should have been more specific.

I agree that the XL is over-engineeried for what it is called on to do - 7500 miles for it is easy. It could do 10-12k easy in 'most' applications....

Problem with XL is that a lot of OTC counter syns are doing what it can do, and are easier/cheaper to get. I'd love to see a 'shoot-out' between PP and XL - I'd bet the results would be basically identical.

You're correct, I am indeed wrong... It's actually $22.55 now for 5 quarts.
