BMW B58 Engine Oil Recommendation

I kind of feel like X3 is a Porsche thing and hasn't been updated / won't be updated to SP anytime soon so it may be a while before it gains LL04. I agree that if it gets updated to SP it will probably appear with LL04.
Not sure. Castrol Edge 0W30 and API SL and regained LL01.
Will see.

this must be the thickest 0xx oil i have known so far.
KV 14
VI 204
HTHS 3.8
says its for high power engines .
Almost like a misprint in the specs...3.8 is getting seriously up there. Do you suppose they are using pour point depressants to get down to the 0w rating?

No, it's probably a very light base oil. This is rumored to have some magic polymer in it. I normally would be scared off by a VI of 200 but it's the flagship oil and Porsche uses it in everything from 911 Turbo S to Cup cars. It's the philosophical opposite to HPL No VII. Since we have no data, it comes down to if you believe in Infineum/Mobil's engineering being superior and this product breaking the traditional rules or not.

It passed the Porsche engine tests, in spite of having to accommodate OPF requirements. Who cares how they got there. I have trouble justifying paying $$$$ for boutique oils without performance having been proven.

.
M1 ESP X3 0W-40 (incl its rebadged VW and Audi sisters) is the only VW 511 00 and Porsche C40 approved oil with 0W. All the rest is 5W-40. Perhaps it tells a lot.

I agree, it could pass BMW's requirements for LL-04, however we know when it actually gets that approval. Not yet.

ps
See my sig below for VW 511 00.

BMW is again approving 0WXX oils for LL01 and LL04. Mobil1 didn’t carry any BMW approval since 2015. New ESP 5W30 is again LL04.
new lost the approval again, don't know what is going on. Also there is a new mobil1 5w-30 ESP Formula P. Can also be website error. But it seems to be on Swe, Fin, and germanys homepage.🤔

Formula P is the same as the old ESP SN+. The SP lost Renault for some reason I think so they introduced this.

Thanks, although it looks like FCPEuro doesn't carry this variant.

Is it worth buying over M1 ESP or the other XClean+ variations?
Not sure, I do not think it is worth per say. M1 0W30 still does not have LL04.
Will see how it performs. I have 12 bottle case ready for the next oil change in Atlas and will do UOA. Motul X-Clean+ 5W30 returned excellent UOA.

Approvals are coming from car manufacturers. Recommendations are coming from oil blenders. Recommendations are basically their opinion based on set of variables they determine is appropriate to recommend that oil. It might be more stringent than approvals, it might not.

Well in this case its Ravenol, so thats as good as a recommendation there ever will be. At some point is just a matter of extra cost that will be transferred to customers.
Budget noname oils with few approvals (non at all in some cases) and a long list of recommendations about as bad as it can get.

You are assuming too much.
What is budget oil? What are “few” approvals? How many approvals it has to be to satisfy your “taste?” Why would Ravenol approved or recommend oil be better than Mobil1, Castrol, Redline, Amosil, OMV, Repsol, Statoil, just to name few?
