Big Ford EV Announcement Coming Aug 11th

We’ve come to accept the advertising of inexpensive EV’s yet don’t match the low base price in the media.

I hope it works out for Ford, been kicking around a pick up for a long time and I think they have an edge up on GM when it comes to trucks

The bait on switch on pricing is getting old. Someone needs to break this cycle.

Even when the Model 3 came out, the lower priced models didn't show up for quite a while. I have my doubts there will be a $30K version of this truck next year, if ever. And then I'm sure they'll slap on a $1500-$2000 destination charge.
The bait on switch on pricing is getting old. Someone needs to break this cycle.
Full agreement here, with the caveat that, this isn't even EV specific. Lower end models are harder to find on any vehicle.
 
Ford just started initial production on the LFP cells for the Universal EV Platform at BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan.

“We are on track to ship electric vehicle batteries in 2026, which will make Ford the first to deliver lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in the U.S. for mainstream consumer automotive use.”

Meanwhile, Ford has indicated that its Universal EV Platform will be utilized for many different vehicles.

Ford bluntly replied to a question about the chance that the Ford Mustang Mach-E could migrate to the platform in the future stating "No, it will not be used for the Mustang Mach-E. This platform was built from a clean sheet to maximize efficiency." That last part heavily implies that the current Mach-E does not utilize a cost-conscious platform. That meshes well with what Ford CEO Jim Farley has recently said about its first generation electric vehicles, namely that they were designed the "wrong way." He also stated that he totally regretted the Ford F-150 Lightning, which the company stopped producing in late 2025. Globally, the company lost $3 billion on its first generation electric vehicles through the third quarter of 2025 and decided to write off $19 billion in EV assets through Q4, a decision that involved cancelling the F-150 Lightning's all-electric successor, a three row EV, and the next-generation Ford E-Transit.

Ford is going to use an integrated Apple Maps app for UEV. Integrates Blue Cruise routes and EV route planning and battery preconditioning. Sounds just like what GM does with Google Maps.

I’m thinking, assuming the big announcement by Ford is going to be an electric pick up with a diesel generator?
The sole purpose of the generator will be too extend driving range. It will not in any way. Be part of the drive line.

Ummm...no. Ford has been trying to reduce costs. The 6.8 was dropped. The Lightning was dropped. The new vehicle is a 30K EV. A diesel series hybrid is not in alignment with what Ford has been doing lately. Diesel just costs too much. They'd faster adopt the gas EREV for HD use.

Oh, so I made a mistake. It’s not a diesel generator. It will be a gasoline generator.

We've known for awhile that the next gen Lightning will be EREV. Farley was on record as saying that huge batteries weren't viable in the market due to costs. Probably in response to the BT1 (Silverado/Sierra EV) and its 9,000 lb gross. I suspect Ford will change its tune eventually. GM has already said that when people go electric, they don't usually go back to gas. Future EV trucks will be more capable and more affordable, not less. And I suspect many of the people complaining about EV limitations don't actually use their vehicles for everything they claim to.

I wasn’t sure if everybody knew extended range EV meant having a generator on the truck.

As far as GM statement, that people generally don’t go back that doesn’t mean with only less than 3% of the electric vehicles on US roadways that’s the future of everything

As far as limitations, there’s no denying EVs are smaller expensive vehicles in a big country.
However, there are plenty of small vehicles that run on gasoline that electric vehicle could take his place at the right price if someone so chooses one
 
I expect a large part of the announcement to involve a Ranchero small truck, Slate-like. Nebulous images of new battery technology that can help create mass produced, cheap EVs is appearing in my crystal ball.

Would be interesting to know where they got that data point from. I went from diesel to electric and back to diesel within 6 months due to towing range. If you look at used vehicle listings, there are a TON of electric vehicles with 5,000 miles or less on them for sale.

Having said that, if I was going to buy an electric truck today it would be the Silverado specifically because it has the most range.

If I had to guess, it's probably from a combination of their customer data, as well as market survey data. GM has been selling the Bolt since 2017 and before that they had the Spark EV and the Volt. They also introduced the Lyriq for the 2023 model year, so by now GM probably has a good handle on what those customers transitioned to.

Towing is a very specialized case that doesn't apply to the vast majority of vehicle consumers, including consumer pickup owners. At this stage, there is ample information publicly available about the towing limitations of EVs, so anyone getting an EV truck probably has, or should have, a good handle on whether or not an electric truck would meet their use case. The Silverado EV and its platform mates are very capable tow vehicles for those towing less than 600 miles, which would be boat owners and people who camp near their primary residence. Long distance towing is a definitely bigger challenge, but can still be covered depending on the specific routes.

While the segment took a hit from the elimination of a the tax credit and had future sales pulled forwards due to the credit elimination, it appears that used EV prices have actually increased, as I see far fewer of the deals that were available just six months ago. And Q2 EV sales were higher than Q1, down a smaller percentage YoY as compared to Q1. Some things have a tipping point. You hear nothing, then that's all you hear about. For me, Crypto and ChatGPT were like that. My daughter was just remarking yesterday at Costco at how many Teslas were in the parking lot. She used to play Tesla instead of punch buggy with her friends, but now they just get sore because the cars are literally everywhere. A lot of the vitriol directed at EVs stemmed from politicization, as they were a convenient target for virtue signaling. I think the current state of gas prices is overcoming much of the opposition and as more people gain experience with them, they're becoming converts.

Personally I do not see the value in an EV powered pickup. Maybe if you were an around town carpenter type in a high gas prices area, but then again you are paying a premium for the EV drivetrain.

I leased it. I would never "buy" an EV. To be honest it was the perfect vehicle 90% of the time. Cost $14 bucks to “fill up” at home, insurance was less, maintenance was far less, and the convenience of being able to use it to power anything else I wanted was nice. I loved that I could leave the truck turned on while parked in silence and still use the HVAC and all the features inside while eating lunch or working on the laptop or whatever. It was just very very nice. But the dealbreaker was the 10% of the time we needed to tow the camper (which contrary to a post above a LOT of people do) long distance. This made life a nightmare.

So I have a diesel truck again which solves the towing issue, and I’m looking at smaller EV options for a “daily driver”.
