Ford has unveiled the Mustang GT3 race car, based on the all-new 2024 Mustang Dark Horse, during a special ceremony as part of this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, June 10-11.

The automaker also announced plans to enter the GT3 into the iconic endurance race’s FIA GT3 category in 2024, along with an entry in the 2024 World Endurance Championship season under Proton Competition, the German team led by team principal Christian Ried.

“Ford and Le Mans are bound together by history. And now we’re coming back to the most dramatic, most rewarding and most important race in the world. It is not Ford versus Ferrari anymore. It is Ford versus everyone,” said Jim Farley, CEO of Ford Motor Co.

Multimatic will build and support the GT3s, while M-Sport will assemble the Ford Performance-developed 5.4 L Coyote-based V8 engines. It features a bespoke short-long arm suspension, rear-mounted transaxle gearbox and carbon fiber body panels and an aero package developed to meet GT3 targets.

In addition, the automaker announced a new Ford Performance branding described as a “cleaner, simplified look” that will be integrated across its racing vehicles.

Has the 5.4 mod motor, not the 5.0
Not sure why they didn't use the 5.8 Trinity motor...would be nice to have AL blocks available again for those.

No; it's likely a Coyote engine that happens to displace the same 5.4L as the old mod motor.
They took the 5.2L from the Shelby GT cars and punched it to 5.4L.
It says right in the lead post that it's a "Coyote" engine.

What’s significant about these Coyote engines ?

Can they keep up with BMW and Benz at the 24 Hours of LeMans.

Sure they can, the rules are fairly even:

Performance of all the Group GT3 cars are regulated, either by the GT Bureau of the FIA or by a series' specific ruling body, through Balance of Performanceformulae that adjusts limits on horsepower, weight, engine management, and aerodynamics to prevent a single manufacturer from becoming dominant in the class. The cars in GT3 are designed to have a weight between 1200 kg and 1300 kg (2645 lbs and 2866 lbs) with horsepower between 500 hp and 600 hp. All cars have a very similar power to weight ratio but achieved either by high power and high weight such as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG[2] or low power and low weight such as the Porsche 911 GT3.[3] GT3 cars also have traction control, ABS, and built-in air jacks for quick pit stops.
