API emergency provision - Group 3

Walmart was completely cut off by Exxon Mobil and Shell a couple months ago. Rumor has it Walmart stocked up big time before they were cut off. Whatever is on Walmart shelves should be what they have stocked up in their distribution centers. That is to say it should all be the original spec oil before this all happened and how they’re able to maintain their current pricing.
Interesting, where did that info come from?

If it meets the performance requirements does it matter beyond a wife’s tale or some imagineering that someone is going to keep their car for 800k miles?
Right!
I recall talking to a self-proclaimed "car guy" who had no idea what API is nor that motor oil basestocks are classified in five groups. This same guy had 3K drains done on his cars and didn't do them himself, proclaiming that he was "old school".
I can foresee shops advising shorter drain intervals for the next decade based upon the supposed decline in finished motor oil quality.
The ignorance of the average owner should not be underestimated.

I worked with someone who was willing to DIY anything and everything when it came to his house. Framing. Roofing. Drywall. Plumbing. You name it.

But he said he really hated working with car fluids, and it was worth both his money and time to pay someone else no matter how simple the job.

Sounds like my dad. Talked to him about the current happenings concerning base oils. His response: “Oil is oil.”

Over the years I have worked with a few aircraft A&P mechanics that were the same way. When it came to their vehicles, they would gladly pay for someone else to do it even thought they in theory had the skill set to do the work.

I’m an helicopter AME (Canadian A&P). We’re splitting and working on the drivetrains of helicopters all the time. I hate paying for someone to work on my vehicles. I try to do what I can around the house but don’t have the patience for any large projects.
