With my 4200 vortec at 185,000, I dont leak or use hardly any oil. Just knowing the age of the motor, iI am thinking about going with 10w30 over the recommended 5w30.

I'm not after extended drain intervals, just a good 10-30 before summer. Currently have Synpower in now, just curious what Rotella offers and if it's even close to maxlife or synpower.

I'd stick with your 5w30.

Also, a 10w30 will not flow as well as the 5w30 when your engine is cold. Really there isn't much of an advantage to go with a 10w30 over a 5w30.

Only thing I was concerned with was wear, with added clearances. Would the 10-30 be more stable across the board with a narrower range?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using 10w30 in your high miler in the summer. You'll likely never be able to tell the difference.

The 10w30 will generally be more shear stable and a hair thicker than the 5w30, although Rotella is a completely different animal than the 5w30's you've been using.

Rotella 10w30 will be a much thicker oil on start-up but also at operating temp's even compared to a PCMO 10w30.
I'd stick to the 5w30 grade and if you want more high temp' protection use a 5w30 synthetic.

The best for the engine is to keep the cold weight as thin as possible for the best flow at startup when most engine wear occurs. But a thicker warm weight can be beneficial to oil burners or old "tickers" in the summer. AFAIK there is no 5w40 dino which would be perfect. Only full syns which are more expensive. I've used T6 5w40 in the past to quiet down my old chevy pickup with a vortec 4.3. I blend Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 with M1 5w30 in the old Camry over the summer, have problems with oil consumption. You could try blending. 2qts 5w30, 2qts 10w40 or some other mix. Nothing wrong with doing that.

Try Maxlife 5w30 syn or syn blend.

That is a high HTHS oil versus your current spec'd low HTHS. I would stay with the manufacturer's spec'd dexos1 oil with the green flag on the front of the container. It is superior to what you are using now.

IMO I would use a 5w30 until there is oil consumption. Assuming your oil pressure is still good. May i ask what oil you have used up to this point? 180000+ Miles?

I have used about 95 percent mobile one send pow spac Sy Synn power I'm sorry the text is so bad but my screen just shattered on my cell phone I'm trying to pick up some oil once I leave wor

Synpower 3000 miles on it 400 miles ago I used rislone and my lifter tick stop almost immediately after treatment

Rotella 10w30 has shown itself in the few UOAs posted here to be really good stuff.
If you wnat to use it, why not?
OTOH, if this engine has few leaks and little consumption, why not dance with the 5w30 that brung ya to ~180K?
If the engine still has minimal need for adds from either leaks or consumption, a 5w30 should be all you really need.

They only have 1 gal of the 5-40 rotella synthetic but many of the 5-40 Delo 400LE

Let me correct some of this now I'm in front of a working keyboard.

Oil is PP and has 3100 miles on it. I added Rislone at 2600 and after debating the Rotella tonight I came home with Pennzoil Dexos synthetic blend 5w30.

I will go with this for awhile and see what happens but I am curious about switching to 5W-40 given the mileage.

I want to think that the oil pump and the engine bearings have likely gained a ten-thou or 2 over the 185K I have on it, that's what I'm stuck on.

Just a thought, I am curious if the T6 or 400LE give anything to the PP or Synpower for roughly a 5-6K drain interval.

I appreciate the replies.

If you've run primarily 5w30 M1 thus far, I would expect your engine to be in very good shape internally. You said you have no leaks and little to no consumption. I'd keep doing what you have been doing. If anything, I'd consider switching to M1 HM in 5 or 10w30 and keep racking up those miles.
