I’d imagine there’s some cleaning going on. I saw the oxidation difference too. Very interesting. Not sure why it’s so different? What is surprising to me, in my limited knowledge, are the "low numbers" of zinc and phosphorus. Way lower than what I would expect, but the wear levels where still good.
In the pics above I showed a pic of the magnetic drain plug, and it being "dirtier than I would expect or remember it to be". Perhaps the "higher than expected" wear metals, are a result of some cleanup happening. Entirely possible.
Viscosity is really close to VOAs that I have seen for this oil, at 9.9, so the viscosity did not change much if at all.
The oxidation value from a posted VOA to this example are much different, not sure what that means
I have noticed the dipstick. It has been noticablely cleaner.....where oil has touched the stick and above.I’d imagine there’s some cleaning going on. I saw the oxidation difference too. Very interesting. Not sure why it’s so different?
A 5k mile sample would be great if the leak doesn't get to bad. Really nice to see budget oils offered by Amsoil. I'd guess the viscosity will be in spec but maybe lower TBN? No idea Amsoil never disappoints so you never know. Personally I'm interested in trying the newish Amsoil OE 0w-40 in my L84.So just over 4000 miles now. I think that there might be a leak on the oil pressure sender, on the back upper side of the block. Not a hard thing to do. I suspected that it might be leaking before I tried this oil, so as not to confuse. It is not the oil making the sender leak, it has just got worse over the last 7k.
I think this weekend, I am going to go ahead and change the oil. On 3k, the oil level remained unchanged from full, currently, the oil level is higher half on the dipstick, still within operating range, just a shade low. IMO, this will give the best and most honest review I can muster.....plus I have no extra to put in of the same oil, plus, any oil added will skew results.
Either way, I ordered my test from Speed Diagnostix today in prep for the weekend change.
Very nice results! Viscosity looks great for a so called budget oil. I wouldn't hesitate to run this oil in my L84 5.3 following the OLM for the typical 5000-7500 mile runs. It's interesting how the formulation works. This oil has roughly 2x as much moly than Amsoil's OE and HM offerings.View attachment 285781
So this was the result from the second consecutive test with this oil in this engine. I look forward to the expert opinions. With my limited knowledge on the subject, I would say that the oil held up pretty good, especially the viscosity. Overall, I would run this juice on the regular.
Edit:
Also, just was looking at the fuel dilution numbers, and its decline.....in relation to an observation of the cleanliness to the dipstick nastiness of the drain plugs as noted in previous posts. I have to wonder (assuming the test is good) if this oil has cleaned up some piston rings, and there by limited the amount of fuel dilution? Not sure. The dipstick is notably cleaner....which is a surprise to me. Not sure how to quantify the fuel dilution difference.
there has to be something somewhere. maybe moly is taking place for something "lacking" in the base?.... not sure....not educated enough.....but it works and does well and made by a reputable company.Very nice results!
