With a PC membersip I can get 9 quarts of SS for $11 more than XL. SS comes in a tad over $100 so one saves $9.99 on shipping. Why would one use XL?

XL is API approved; SS is not.
Also I don't need an API starburst. My 2020 Tundra manual says must meet spec and "some" oils have a starburts. Which means some dont. Amsoil has a warranty and since 1972 not one engine has been destroyed. Not worth paying yearly for a cert when everyone knows its exceeds it.

It's up to each individual to choose what is the best for their application and budget.

I have an acquaintance that uses nothing but XL because he is convinced PAO might cause leaks in his older vehicles.

Ummm-my indy has had a couple customers destroy engines when they pushed SSO to 25K WITHOUT UOAs or verifying if the oil/engine could handle it. IIRC they were SBCs or possibly pre-modular Ford V8s? Sludged pretty badly, as I remember. That's why UOA is your friend if you're going to get crazy!

Paying for shipping is just silly when you can get it for free with a few more quarts.
Obviously the XL is cheaper but it is also a very good oil. The SS is an even better oil. Both will perform well.

Did they make a claim with Amsoil?

No. Amsoils warranty in fine print says you MUST follow Manufacturers oil change.

I don't believe that is true; I post the following simply for clarification

They state

• Failure of equipment due to not following original equipment manufacturer (hereinafter, “OEM”) recommendations for warranty coverage, including lubricants, maintenance and drain intervals, prior to the first installation of AMSOIL lubricants, or any other pre-existing condition or OEM defect unrelated to the use of AMSOIL.

i.e Amsoil will not "rescue an engine" not properly maintained prior to use of Amsoil.

and

• Failure of equipment when AMSOIL lubricants are not used in strict accordance with either the written recommendations of AMSOIL or the OEM for warranty coverage. The Consumer is solely responsible for determining a product’s merchantability or fitness (“suitability”) for a particular purpose and assumes all risks and liabilities when used other than in strict accordance with either the written recommendations of AMSOIL or the OEM for warranty coverage.

i.e One cannot "just run to 25K" (which actually is "up to 25K or 700 hours, 15K for severe service) without suitability validation.

As previously pointed out by Pablo there are reasonable ways to extend OCI to x2 to x4 the mfg recommendations and then there are reckless ways.
I'm guessing the pushing to 25K without a UOA is the latter, not the former, and Amsoil never indicated they would stand behind the product if that were done.

Additionally, they cover losses confirmed by a failure of their product. They don't cover things like roaching a motor due to an oil pump failure because you happened to be running Amsoil, Amsoil's claims and warranty appear to be about as widely misunderstood as the concept of a 5W-30 being "too thin" for starting a car that specs 10W-30

Considering you engine will most likely outlast the chassis and drive train is not the ownership of the vehicle with any off the shelf oil from one of the major producers , why use Amsoil to begin with? I have to ask.

Simple gifts nailed it.

Memories can be interesting things. But yes people don't read. Much.

I've been with Amsoil 22+ years. Not one sludged engine, if we are being anecdotal.

BITOG always trying talk people out of Amsoil, it's interesting that's for sure. Use what you want.

BITOG always tries to talk people out of an oil selection, especially if it's not available at Walmart 🤭
