Two vehicles in Chicagoland:
2011 Subaru Forester non-turbo 90K miles
2012 Toyota Sequoia 4WD 50K miles

Engine Oil Change Intervals, based on weather of Chicagoland rather than mileage on vehicles:
Oil and filter every 6 months. Oct end & April end.
Before winter in Oct end, vehicle mileage varies. Range of 7.K miles to 10K miles each.
In spring by April end, mileage usually at 5K miles each; short trips in snow.

Engine Oil: AMSOIL Signature 0W-20.
Filters: AMSOIL filter for Subaru. Toyota OEM for Sequoia.

Problem on which advise needed:
AMSOIL 0W-20 costing around $300 each year, including membership fees.
Can this be replaced by Mobil1 Advanced Fuel Economy Oil 0W-20 or Mobil1 Extended Performance Oil 0W-20?

Main thinking for considering this change:
Given the Walmart prices for Mobil1, current and historically, this cuts the cost down in half for both vehicles - around $150 a year.
AMSOIL is double this money. Not sure if its worth it given 6 month oil change intervals.

Help is much appreciated.

Regards,
Kevin

I think that plan is fine. I have used amsoil almost exclusively in my accord. Once I finish up the stuff I bought on clearance I will be switching to M1 AFE bought on airplane clearance.
I already use it in my LS400

Mobil 1 EP is excellent for extended oil changes. So is Castrol EDGE EP. Many full synthetic oils will do well up to 10k miles.

$300 a year for oil? Buying with MIR or on clearance will get you synthetic oil for $2qt. I believe you can get 4 jugs of Mobil 1 per year at $12 after rebate.

I have used M1 AFE for several years with very good results. In my 2007 Fusion the engine is like new clean, no sign of engine wear, and still at 213K, the oil level never drops below the full mark. The same for my 2007 Focus that was totaled in June with 175K.

Changing the oil twice a year doesn't really call for a syn although winter starting can be a plus with syn oil.

I really don't get why anyone runs Amsoil, it literally does nothing different off the shelf brands are capable of for half the price. Go for M1 and never look back, your wallet will thank you! It's more than capable for 6 months, could probably easily do a year if you really wanted to.

Mobil 1 runs a rebate period that I think continues until end of Sept
They will rebate you $12 per 5 quart jug and WalMart has the oil on rollback at present for 22.xx
They makes the jug more than reasonable
And the cost will be WAY less than $300 per year
Hope this helps
Bob

Hotshot Driver clocked one million miles on a '07 Tundra (basically the same vehicle are your Sequoia) on dealership oil changes. And I'd bet my next paycheck the Toyota Dealer isn't slinging Amsoil...

Make the switch with confidence.

That can be done with most any vehicle, if driven enough miles every year, and well maintained. A friend just had the Trans re-built in his 3 year old Toyota van with 80K. No towing and he never abuses his van. The article does say the engine or trans wasn't replaced, but it doesn't say they weren't re-built.

I think that is a well thought out OCI plan. Using that plan and the AFE should work well.

Kevin Walmart has lots of other good synthetics on rollback as well. I just picked up some Quaker State Ultimate Durability for $20.24 and sent in for my rebates to boot. That will make my total for my OCI just a hair over $20 oil and filter. I'm like you and change oil in the fall and the spring. So this year I'll have under $50 for my Toyota for both OCI's. The Fram Ultra was $7.94.

If they're claiming a million miles, they're going to mean the same engine (and a rebuild would at least be mentioned otherwise it's 'dishonest').

The article does mention "Toyota wants to get its hands on Sheppard's pickup so that it can take it apart and see how it's held up". If it's been re-built, there's little value in them inspecting the engine unless it was rebuilt 800,000 miles ago 'cause 200,000 mile Toyotas are normal.

Half price with Mobil1 EP, go 4 it, case closed!
As much as I like long drain, with the standard oil filter, I find it does not make sense to run beyond 10k, especially if the air intake is modified. My experience with Amsoil is not impressive, when the oil past 5k, I can feel the oil tends to be much thicker when engine is cold compared when the oil is new

I follow a very similar oil change schedule and use whatever cheap oil is on sale. Sometimes it's a synthetic, sometimes conventional. Been doing this for 25 years without a problem. You will be fine switching to Mobil oil.

With you changing oil every 6 months, you aren't using Amsoil like they recommend. If you want to save money and with your low miles, I'd just change the Amsoil once a year. You could always try it for one year and do an oil analysis at the end of the year.

I'd at least leave the Amsoil oil filters in for a year.

How did you choose Amsoil to begin with? Why did you choose it? You probably felt it offered you the best protection for your cars. EVERY time I left Amsoil to save money, I ended up regretting it. I started using Amsoil 35 years ago left them 4 times but always came back. I never left their ATF or Gear oils.

Call me crazy. Say I'm irrational. Go with your heart.
