Maxes out - stays there - and eventually goes to PRV … but the left side of that plateau is early …

Pump is really a just two stage for all intents and purposes …
That's a simpler setup compared to some that try to have a more non-step pressure/flow control profile. On a system like yours, if the oil pressure jumps up at some RPM point and pretty much stays there with increased RPM then it's most likely cutting some oil flow at the higher RPM range compared to an old fashioned PD which will have a pretty linear pressure/flow curve right up to pressure relief.

Like mentioned before, there are many VVOP designs out there. I know the 3rd Gen Coyote has a fairly complicated control system where you can get into the software (with the right scanner tool setup) to change all kinds of control settings/parameters.

until you floor it too hard and send it into power mode but the prime is less sensitive as it has more battery. in the reg prius you cant accelerate as hard until the engine kicks which is pretty slow acceleration.
This happens multiple times a day. Big hills, and highway. I can hear the engine rev up, it is in the power spot on the gauge.

I guess you could check the manual to see what the engineers who designed the car and who have mastered geometry, trigonometry, algebra, and calculus say.

Ok, ok. Let me rephrase. He knows what works. And he doesn’t want to deviate from what’s recommended. Because he doesn’t want to be responsible if damage occurs. There is nothing wrong with going thicker, according to Toyota, but it’s often not necessary

Obviously you didn’t listen to what he said. In the end he said they see damage from using anything other than 0w16. In the manuals it says if 0w16 is. It available, 0w20 can be used to top off but needs to be changed with 0w16. Also this 0w16 is nothing new. Japan has been using it a long time and actually they have 0w8 in their new Toyota’s. I also want to add bc I see your avatar is a BMW emblem. What do you think happens if you don’t use an oil with the LL01 or LL04 certification long term??

BMW recommends ll-01 fe (0w-30) for my X3. But instead I use Castrol or Valvoline 5w-40 (LL-01). I really don’t care that BMW says to use ll-01 fe in ll-01 applications. Some of the newer BMWs say to use the 0w-20 whatever approval oil but the manual also says one can use ll-01 fe or ll-01.
