Is there any chance I can cause damage switching from 0W-16 to 5W-30 for 2024 Crosstrek which specifices 0W-16? From my research 0W16 is specified because it is the optimum for balancing gas mileage and protection. Not optimum for protection. It is probably the bare minimum for protection.

From owners manual "0W16 is the required oil for optimum engine performance and protection."

The 2022 Crosstrek in Japan specified a range of oils and I believe it is the same engine.

Yup ESP will save the day...?,,only if a euro engine,, in my 2024 Subaru Crosstrek I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-20 in winter and 5w-30 in summer changing twice a year with filter , works just fine. there is absolutely nothing wrong with API,,, ILSAC,,,,RC rated////SQ,,GF-7 oils in most applications in the US.

But the oil jug repeatedly tells user that 0w-16, 0w-8 belongs to GF-6B and is not compatible with engines using GF-6A oil.

Since no bitoger's engine explosion due to thicker oil has been documented on this site, should we say 6A-6B difference is a hoax?

Shoot….I have euro tires on my Subaru.

It’s not going to hurt anything but “required” (from your quote of the booklet) is strong language. How long are you planning on keeping the car? Does it have a Subaru extended warranty?

We know the oems will do almost anything to get 0.1mpg higher on that cafe rating.
You found the cheat code, getting the manual for your engine published for a market that doesn't have the insane fuel economy mandate that the US has/had.

You can also use ESP X2 0W-20 if it makes you feel better by deviating less from recommendation.

You sure can, but I would follow @Glenda W. consider using 0w-30.

Also, given that you are already going considerably thicker than your manual, you may not necessarily need the thickest oil of that grade.

Do you have more details that shows that is the recommended oil for the 2022 JDM Crosstrek? I know the 2023 JDM Crosstrek allows Les Pleiades 0W-30 but surprised at the 5W-40.

I still have my 50 cent euro coin I found on vacation a decade ago. Will keeping that in a cadillac or mitsubishi cupholder make it accept euro oil too or do I have to sit on it? Better yet I should drill a hole into euro coin and put a wood screw into the engine cover 😂
