2nd choice oil to keep rings clean?

I thought I remember everyone raving about the cleaning ability of Pennzoil ultra platinum. Is that not a thing anymore ? I never tried it. I always used Valvoline because I liked the jugs.

I don’t recall that being a thing, I’ve never heard anyone mention that it reduced their consumption for instance

From the pinned Pennzoil Q&A:

Q: Valvoline claims its Valvoline Restore and Protect oil can clean up to 100% of piston deposits, whereas most oils only prevent deposits. Can Pennzoil synthetics clean existing varnish or piston deposits? How do Pennzoil’s formulations address existing deposits compared to preventive performance?
Additionally, how does Pennzoil view the role of Group V esters and alkylated naphthalene in cleaning performance? Is there merit to the claim that esters “run clean” rather than actively clean? How was Pennzoil’s cleaning performance validated or proven?

A: Pennzoil Platinum full synthetics have been formulated to not only prevent deposits, but clean existing varnish and sludge. We have consistently maintained and demonstrated our “unsurpassed cleanliness” benefit with our Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum products in industry tests such as the API Sequence IIIH and Sequence VH engine tests, as well as results from our taxi fleets in Las Vegas and New York.
Regarding the contributions of cleanliness and performance from different base oils, while a good-quality base oil is important, it can only achieve its full potential when blended with key additive technology to enhance and optimize its performance. Only through rigorous research and testing, combined with the right additives and base oil, can a motor oil be formulated into a high-performance product, as seen in Pennzoil Platinum and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

Good Question!

Did not answer the Question!
but clean existing varnish and sludge.
If you can clean the Varnish, why not the Piston Deposits?

With a Test that was done to get to get the answers that the tester wanted.

I am so glad I am not using Pennzoil Platinum anymore after reading the above statement. I think I will stick with Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 for the colder months and then use Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 during the Summer!

that was my thought too.for 4- 5000km OCI we know its a full ester product, and some kind of esters clean the engine ,but are these cleaning esters in 300V ?
They are high ester oils, but far from a "full "ester oil, as that is not possible with the need for a variety of other base oils.

It's fun to guess but ultimately you need to test.

We know for GF-7 the min is now 4.6 (up from 4.2 and 4.0 previously). dexos R has a min of 5.4. Amsoil back in 2014 scored a 7.7.

So I'd go with Mobil 1 ESP / Mobil 1 Advanced Clean off the shelf (probably Pennzoil Ultra Platinum as well despite being a dry oil) as well as any Euro oil meeting VW/MB spec.

Boutique - Amsoil.
