Need a higher viscosity oil than 5w30 that keeps rings clean

The Trooper did great this winter with the Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 oil. Now with the warmer days its started drinking oil again.

I assume Because the oil is getting warmer and thinner. I see that I can get High mileage oils in 10w40 and even 20w50 but will those keep ring. Lands clean?

What about a sae40 or sae50 straight weight oil?

Why not mobil 1 15w50 ? You are in a desert climate.
I second this. At least where I'm at you can pick Mobil 15w50 up in any Walmart and even if it shears... tada! it's a 40wt!

I ran it in my tuned turbo Benz that runs E30 blended fuel for drag racing for a summer and I had no issues.

Now will it keep ring lands clean? No idea.

I 3rd

Is the oil drinking from ring issues, PCV or other mechanical issues? Does the thicker oil actually slow that burning down? What OCI are you going with? How much is the actual "drinking" at what miles (1 quart every XXX miles)?

Not the inexpensive version but High Performance Lubricants has whatever viscosity option you might like and as others have shown will clean ring areas and other parts. Amsoil probably also.

Pick your favorite that you want to try and add a bottle or 2 of Rislone at each change like @Retirednow has discussed multiple times IIRC.

These engines were known for ring sticking as well as not having enough oil return holes in the pistons. Those holes get some sludge in them and that makes the usage even worse.

It was using 1 qt of oil in 15 miles. I soaked the pistons with B12 and started running Valvoline Restore and Protect oil in it. Consumption went to 1qt in 1500 miles which lasted for about 5000 miles.

Now its dropped back to 1qt every 600 miles.

How many oil changes with Restore & Protect did you do? Did you complete at least 4 oil changes for total of 20,000 miles?
What oil have you used the last 5-10 years?
Make sure you don't have any oil leaks because even minor they add up over the OCI and no oil can stop them.

Devils advocate? I think it was discussed a couple times where the thicker oil lead to more oil burning. If I recall the scenario the thicker oil not flowing quite as easy, more MOFT, stays on the walls harder to scrape off. Yours not having enough oil return holes won't let enough flow through, it gets burnt, possible carbon junk adding to clogged holes that you don't have enough of.

I could be totally off the reservation also but it depends on the cause of the increased burning. What happens if you do another piston soak, maybe longer version? Maybe instead of Restore and Protect find some of the actual Premium Blue Restore from a Cummins dealer?

Bought the car used Jan 2025. I'm on the 2nd oci and its almost used up a whole jug of oil in 3500 miles. The first oci showed a huge improvement as the miles went up. No idea on its past oil history. No leaks.

Thing runs really good and sounds great. Just likes oil. I'm more concerned about the catalysts as it has to be emissions tested here.

$275 is a little steep for me at the moment lol

Trade her cars for a week and see how much oil it uses when you drive it. Maybe revving it like an Indy car doesn't help? No don't your Jeep probably wouldn't survive. Hard to imagine warmer temps made the consumption go up that much.
Can't really trade cars as my insurance won't cover anyone with less than 3 yrs driving experience and they also are not taking any more policies from California. . Also putting a child seat in the back of a jeep is miserable.

She also dislikes the stick shift.

That sounds pretty good. You're on your 2nd oil change interval with Valvoline Restore and Protect. Don't break the cycle with different oil! That's what I can tell you from reading on here. I'll pour in my 1st Valvoline Restore and Protect oil in a week or two.

A few people on here reported increased oil consumption in either of their first 3 oil changes. Moslty at their 3rd OCI. It's not just the summer, the oil is doing its job, which includes increased oil consumption at one point. So, don't quit and proceed to use the same oil for at least 4 oil change intervals. Even if you need to pay a little extra for topping off more often than before. Buying 5 qts jugs at Walmart is still the cheapest way.
Best of luck with the new vehicle!
