This run of HPL Dexos D 5w-30 now has 12k miles, the same mileage was with the HPL 0w-20 Dexos D.
The consumption was exactly the same at 12k miles comparing the 0w-20 vs 5w-30, 1 quart.
My prior hypothesis that the lower volatility of the 5w-30 would reduce oil consumption was wrong. The volatility of the 5w-30 is about 50% of the 0w-20 and it still used the same amount. The type of miles are very similar between both runs. 90% highway miles and 10% in town.
Oil consumption doesn't seem to be related to volatility. I have taken several temperature measurements with my IR thermometer at the oil sump and I don't think the oil runs nearly as hot as the iDash says. I will see temps on the iDash of 245°F cruising down the interstate. When I stop and shoot the pan I see temps around 200°F. I wonder of the oil temperature read by the iDash is estimated like it is in the 6.6L Duramax?
Where is the oil going? I have a very good clue.
I took these pictures inside the aftercooler with my bore scope. There is oil sitting in the after cooler from the CCV. I believe these 3.0L engines may be ingesting oil because of the CCV design.

I have installed a VSE catch can. More to come.
