2022 Toyota Tacoma SR5, V6

True and for some reason that gets chastised on here. 🤷‍♂️

Well, that and the mini-van engine :ROFLMAO:
It’s because the highway driving experience sucks.

Nothing wrong with a 3rd Gen. IF:

5' 9" or so, or under - seat feels just fine
MT. 6 speed is great tranny
Regear the diffs, 4.88
RWD LOW switch
Tune the engine. There is a LOT of power muzzled in the V6

I added air lockers, F&R

My ONLY gripe, really? Is squeaking clutch peddle at 25K. It's like Toyota didn't test it all. Gonna lube it today.
I’m on 4.88s and have run several tunes. They merely serve to take it from absolutely intolerable to somewhat ok, with lower MPGs.

My friend has a manual Pro. Loves everything about it except backing a trailer. Lol.

He offered it to me for 40k. Wasn’t in a position to buy it so I passed. I’m definitely keeping him in mind though. He puts ~10 miles a day on it. Lol

I don't know if the 6MT is great, good, but not great. It's better than the automatic having said.

Do both 2nd and 3rd gens allow this? I remember seeing something about it years ago, a way to get 2LO.

When I bought my current house, I could watch the trans temp spike while backing my trailer up my driveway. Come to think of it, my Camry would smell quite warm after backing up a small trailer up the same incline too.

Pretty sure they do. They're pretty similar in nature. I remember reading a post about a 2nd gen 2LO mod, but can't find it.

Nice. Halfway tempted to go look at some Tacos but I know I’m shopping for a vehicle for “me” and not the fam. Thing is, my commute is an hour each way! RAV4 is a smarter choice, probably. But I kinda miss having a truck, and despite not being able to move it, I still own a 6x14 enclosed trailer, for reasons I’m not sure of (other than, it is the right tool for when lots of stuff needs moving).

2013 - 2015 is the sweet spot if you don't want a 3rd gen. Those also probably have less rust issues.

It will not pull your 6x14 enclosed very well though

No, probably not. Loved my Tundra but man, it was as big as my house. But it yanked that trailer around with authority. For now I loan the trailer out, friend of mine uses it a couple times a year. It’s actually not a bad tow, I think 1,600lb unloaded? single axle, so it wasn’t bad on backing up (no tire scrub issues).

MT or AT?

AT gonna suck no matter what. My arsesense had enough cents to not buy an AT

My MPG didn't change much, if it did because I drive a bit more spirited and the 4.88s, yes. That said, it's a truck. It's 3.5L. What do you expect? Mine goes faster than I need and I didn't buy it for MPGs.

Worthy mod, especial with stock gearing trying to back up.

That saddest thing about the 3rd Gen Tacoma to me is there seems to me parts of the truck Toyota only "tested on paper".

I just wish these trucks had the grunt of 4LO all the time. Basically turns the clutch into an on and off switch

Been trying to decipher that drawing, think I understand it enough that I could figure it out. What’d be really cool is if flipping the switch would put it into 2LO without having to flip, then set to 4LO. That’d require figuring out how it runs the rest of the system though. Need a factory manual for that. Not going to figure that out, not when I don’t own one!

Basically you turn the switch on before going to 4WD and 4LO and tricks the ECU into thinking the ADD for the front differential is locked in, but it isn't

Yeah I got that part. But the drawing doesn’t mark the NC, NO nor COM pins on the relays. I can figure that out by theory of operation, but not the drawing.

AT, high altitude. Truck is dangerously gutless on Colorado/Wyoming interstate.

I can’t wait to get a hybrid 4th Gen.

I have had my 2018 since April of 2018.
Used it as my work truck while I was a consultant in the Delaware basin in west Texas. It was paid off in 6 months. Had to have a truck in that role.

I then used it to drive to construction sites all over Texas. The truck is best suited for back roads and not interstates but again I was just never had a reason to replace it. I am 6’ 225 and the seats will make you take some breaks on long trips I can tolerate about 3 hours before which isn’t healthy anyway.

I have towed a lot of trailers and a boat for long distances. Never has a problem

I have 86600 on it and it has been retired from work and commuting. My wife uses it for errands and I use it to go fishing ( 150-200 miles each way down to corpus and fish the island or go offshore, or do truck stuff hauling mulch etc for the house. Its accumulation of mileage has slowed down.

During past 3or 4 months I changed all the fluids flushed the powersteeri g and breaks. More of a reflection of my driving style the brakes are original and probably have another year on them. I will go through the ball joints and steering linkage and struts and shocks in the next year. Never getting rid of it replacement trucks cost too much.

I commute in a Corolla cross hybrid now and appreciate using the right vehicle. The truck rides like a covered wagon in comparison.

Things I will note about this generation Tacoma

Wind is everything for mileage. Driving beyond 65 mph starts compounding fuel consumption.the truck like to drive at 80-85 no problem but expect it to cost you.

The 4wd system and try off-road upgrades are rarely used in real life. When I was in the oil field I only needed the ground clearance. I still use the system for beach driving but that’s really mild use. If I still lived in Colorado I would still have my 4 runners for the trails. The Tacoma can do the same trails but less comfortably with a worse departure angle that could cause some hangups.

Don’t be afraid to put your foot into it. The transmission logic will happily keep it in low rpm’s for mileage if you let it. If you aren’t zipping past 3500 rpm’s occasionally you are not driving it right.

Motor oil. I like running m1 0w40 in mine just because it’s a bargain for what it is. I don’t think the truck cares 0w20 to 15w40 if your climate allows.

No real issues. Wish mine had led headlights. 6 years old and all the plastics and finishes moldings annd fabrics are holding up Well except the Tonneau cover is sun faded as is the air vent cover below the windshield. Interior has held up well as had the glass which amazingly for the service is all original.

Look at the hood closely they may have addressed it by 22 but mine developed som indents two softball size . Not real noticeable but it was from how they adhered the inner hood frame to the external skin. Had it replaced once and it reappeared on that hood. . The good news is no one else notices it.

I did add wetokole seat covers in late 2018 and they added some comfort and protection. Unlike all my other. 4wd Toyotas I have had I kept this one stock but will upgrade the suspension but have no intention of upsizing e wheels and tires.

The first set of tires was replaced at 41 k ( oilfield roads chipped the original Goodyears up)and the general grabber ats I replaced them with have held up well but they will age out next year without wearing out the tread.

not much else to say about it other than it’s mine till it stops running or it gets totaled and I will pass it down to a nephew if I go first.
