The stock size oil filter is so tiny it looks like a toy. The stock tiny size filter is
Napa Gold 1334 or Oreilly Microgard Select MSL51334.

Does anyone know if there's a compatible longer filter available? Ideally a longer NAPA Gold filter.

The napa gold 51334 has a large amount of filter media for it`s size. They were made in South Korea and maybe still are. My guess is they are manufactured in the same factory as the Hyundai OEM filter.

You do not need a Longer Oil Filter, use Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 and make sure your Air Filter is clean. If your Air Filter is not clean, change it.

My neighbor's 03 Hyunda Elantra 1.8L has been on a 5000 miles OCI using an unknown brand of 5w20 oil. All city driving. Much of it short trips. My cousin recently changed its oil at 5300 miles. The oil was ungodley filthy, black, and very stinky.

We're going to start changing her oil at 3500 miles from now on. I'd also like to use a longer filter so it will have more filter media. The stock size filter is tiny.

That's why I'm asking if there's a compatible longer filter. Ideally a NAPA Gold.

Run VRP in it for 3k miles max first time, change filter only half way thru after 1-1.5k miles. Cut the removed filter to assess how much gunk is coming off. May need to run VRP for another OCI with just one filter over entire OCI if there isn't too much sludge getting caught (based on first two filters conditions).

Not that you want to probably spend for others but consider a UOA with GC Fuel test (not Blackstone). My daughter-in-laws Tucson on short trips was disgusting looking and smelling at like 6k / 1 year. It was all fuel dilution.

She is now on 3k / 6 month and much better.

I second the vote for using VRP in it. Premium Guard has a safety notice on their website NOT to use their filters on a Hyundai due to pressure issues and filters bursting. Liability and something else on motor as cause but if a filter manufacturer says don't do it. Prior to that they saw Fram, PG, factory and who knows what PepBoys used on Forte. Hers has a long time under warranty still so factory with 3k changes anyway is no issue.

I have hers and my sons Forte on VRP with factory filters. His is 5k changes, currently. Hers 3k, both subject to change since they moved and have different commutes now.

Maybe consider doing a BG EPR flush at the next change anyway.

I was not aware of Premium Guard filters having issues with Hyundai. However, NAPA Gold is not an ordinary Premium Guard EX (premium) filter. NAPA Gold has a thicker can and more filter material.

Anyway, NAPA recommends NAPA Gold 1334 oil filter for Hyunda 1.8L motors. Made by Premium Guard filters are pretty thick, but NAPA Gold are even thicker.

For example, Oreilly Microgard Select have thick cans, as do other PG cans, but NAPA Gold cans are even thicker. Apparently NAPA spec'd that in its requirements, as well as having more pleats and more filter material.

All PG filters are good, but NAPA Gold are better. NG is the creme of the PG crop. That's why I buy NG filters, even though I prefer low cost good enough oils.

I'm confident in the NAPA Gold 1334 filter's quality and compatability, but I wish I could find a longer one.

Edited in Later: I did find a compatible longer filter. NAPA Gold 1344 is compatible and 1 inch longer.

That M1 filter is longer and compatible. 👍

Starting from your info, I cross referenced back to NAPA and found that for NAPA Gold: 1334 (what I have) & 1344 both cross reference as interchangeable with that Mobil 1 filter.

I checked the specs of the 1344 filter and I think everything is same (compatible) as 1334, except the 1344 is 1.1" longer! 👍👍

My only concern is that NAPA does not publish bypass valve differential psi for either filter, but the filters do cross reference as being interchangable. So probably fine. I'll try to get bypass pressure info from NAPA support.

Another wierdness is the 1334 specs state 99% @ 30 microns. The 1344 states 99% @ 40 microns in specs, but states 99% @ 23 microns in "product features" text.

Previously at BITOG (if I recall correctly) we established that all NAPA Gold oil filters are 99% @ 23 microns.

So I have a couple things to ask NAPA Support about, but I think I've found a compatible longer filter that I like for Hyundai 1.8L. It's 41% longer. So likely 41% more filtration material! So likely 41% more capacity to hold dirt! Yahoo! 😀 👍

A longer filter (when you can find one) typically cost $1 more than a standard length filter. I think it's well worth $1 for the extra insurance, especially for long OCI, or in this case while cleaning up a dirty engine.

I don't think it was a filter problem but somehow motor issues creating crazy high pressures. That would burst most filters. PG just covering their butts.
