Do you grease your car hinges?

I noticed that on many new cars the door hinges & hood hinges don't have any grease on them. Do you apply grease to these or do you think they are fine without it? I would think the best thing is to apply some grease, don't know why there isn't any from the factory. thanks

snowbird in South Florida - what oil weight?

Hi, snowbird for the winter..have a PT Cruiser Turbo, car stays here, just use it in the winter months. When the oil is changed should I use 10w30, or use 5w30? Up north I use 5w30 syn, but is due for an oil change. Should I use 10w30, because basically the weather is usually always above...

Starter replacement on GM 5.7 for 2006 Boat

I would like to know if there is a separate relay for these starters or is it part of the starter unit itself. It's difficult to see before I tackle it. This is for a Volvo Drive if that makes any difference. I think the starter got soaked in the Sandy Storm when some salt water came in from the...

Is used anti-freeze OK for septic system?

I thought I read here some time ago that used anti-freeze can be good for a home septic system. The reason is that it grows bacteria after a while and this may be beneficial to the system. Do any of you know of this? thanks

Do oil filters have a Micron rating?

I also own a boat and the recommended Micron rating should be a '10'. I'm wondering if conventional auto oil filters have anything similar, maybe I can sub an auto filter(cheaper)for my boat(GM block). The price for a 'marine' oil filter is about $10+. Is there a site that shows the difference...

How long will an oil filter do its job?

The reason I'm asking is that I tried to change the oil filter on my '99 Intrepid, but it appears to be stuck, extremely difficult to come off. The cap thing,(I used 2 diff. kinds), just slips. I tried to wedge sand paper for grip, but no luck. I change my oil on the short side, so last oil was...

    Off Season gas storage question

With off season coming up, as boaters we put in a fuel stabilizer to keep the gas fresh. (for those of us who live in limited use areas). My concern is that suppose I put in the stabilizer with a few gallons of gas, and not use the engine anymore. Do you think that this would mix in well enough...

What's the deal with High Mileage Oils?

This may have been discussed before, but what's the benefit of high mileage oils? Are they a syn blend or is there some magical formula? Couldn't I use dino and add a qt of syn to get the same benefit? They seem to be priced between dino and syn, so I'm thinking that they must be a blend, so why...

    What does 'non US' mean?

Sounds silly, but I have a Volvo Duo-Prop Drive and the recommended fluid for the power steering is a certain Volvo oil, but 'non US' you can use ATF or higher. How does that make a difference if it is the same unit? I see that Merc has a fluid that seems compatable, saying that it is ATF...

Is Mobil1 75-90 syn gear oil good for outdrives?

I noticed that Mobil 1 has a syn 75w90 gear oil, generally used in automobile applications. I was wondering if this would also be a good use in an outdrive lower unit. I have a Volvo and the gear oil required is 75w90, would M-1 be a good fit? thanks.

How do you check your oil?

Seems stupid I know, but I still want to know. When you first pull out the dipstick, after a cool down or overnight, the oil will register at a certain level. When you do the typical wipe the dipstick then re-insert to check the level at this time, you may get a different reading. Some oil may...

do u flush w fresh water after cruising?

Not an oil question, but I have a fresh water flushing inlet for use on dry land. Is it practicle to flush the engine with fresh water after a day on the water? This would be done while the boat is still in the water. I thought it would help to clean out the saltwater still in the eng block...

Anyone collect modern or older oil containers?

I remember when oil came in a round metal qt. can. Some probably remember it in bottles. What about today? anything of interest? Seems the packaging changes almost every year.

When to change coolant in my Snowmobile?

I just got an '86 SkiDoo, water cooled. I don't have an owners manual, and was wondering how often should the coolant/antifreeze be changed? thanks

At 150K do I alter my OCI?

I use to do a 2K OCI up to 145K on my 99 Intrepid. Now thanks to all you folks here I am doing 3K OCI. Did I go backwards? At higher mileage wouldn't it be better to shorten the OCI? What do you think?

What oil to use in a Snowmobile chaincase?

This may be the wrong place(or not if it gets moved) but I recently got a 1986 Ski-Doo Snowmobile and was wondering what oil is correct for the chaincase? Is there a comparable syn? Is gear oil OK? thanks

What chaincase oil to use in my Snowmobile?

I recently got a used 20 yr old Ski-Doo, and was wondering what chaincase oil should I use to top off? Would it be the same as motorcycle oil? Is there a syn oil for this? thanks

Is it OK to wax a car in cold weather?

I was wondering, if I were in the garage and the temp there was between 30 and 40 degrees, would it be alright to wax the car? I know it would be harder work, but would there be any damage or anything like that? thanks

    Valve stem seal wear

I get a puff of smoke on start up on my '85 Vette with just under 50K, and it seems to be the result of valve seals drying out (as explained by another forum). If I use 'high-mileage' oil, do you believe that it may solve this problem? If it does, what happens if I go back to what I am now...

Can I pull out the 'check engine' light bulb??

Where I live in NY, if your '96 or newer car shows that the check engine light is on, your car will fail the required annual inspection. Can I just pull out this light bulb or cut the wires? or will the car start to go spastic when this happens? This check engine scenario has to be taken care...
