In Autralia, a LS1 performance workshop is recommending Castrol Edge 25W50 and it is a SG rated oil. Is this rating too outdated, or is there some merit in using it eg. additive levels and so on.

I don't know any thing about Castrol Edge or the oils you have in down under, but if it were here, I would not use it. I also would not use 20W-50 in a LS1, but that's just me.

No its a new oil. Been around for about 5 years now. Some performance workshops recommending it, but i dont understand why you would wanna use a SG rated oil in a new car ? Did SG have unique additive levels etc ?

If workshop have modified your engine in any way, I would ask them for specific reasons for their recommendation.

If that's not the case, then I would use oil based on OEM recommendations.

I wouldn't use it. Not necessary unless modded. LS1 engines are designed around 5w30 oils.

Yep, unless the engine has been rebuilt using much larger clearances, I would stick with a 30 weight oil.

If you're doing a lot of road racing with sustained high oil temps (250F plus) then I'd bump that up to a 40 weight, but no more than that. The real solution would be to get a good oil cooler, keep the oil temps below 250F, and run a 30 weight oil though. The big problem with the 20w50 oil is that the viscosity is just far too thick on initial startup, plus you're robbing yourself of about 5hp compared to the 30 weight oils too. And you'd lose a lot of low end torque also, making the engine feel too sluggish.

My LS1 loves Pennzoil Platinum 5w30!
