I recently started a new job as a medical courier. It's the type of job I've been looking for. I get to help people (in a small way - it's not being a brain surgeon), I'm out on my own, I thought the environment would be professional, and it offers fantastic benefits that are worth as much or more then my pay rate.

My last job as a carpet cleaner was more professional than the hospital environment I work in. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to the hospital I work at! A medium sized medical lab bought out the lab processing and logistics portion of the hospital I work at and I work for the new company and I got in 3 months after the buy out. I'm telling you, this place makes the worst run federal government agency look like a utopia case study in a Management 101 textbook! There are 2 supervisors here with no authority or accountability; the rest of management resides in Spokane Washington. It's a free for all. It's office politics gone wild. It's FUBAR, and they're losing clients left and right because no one's at the helm. I showed up ready and willing to bust my [censored] off. I've tried to be nice to everyone, tried to make friends etc. I'd have better luck in a shark tank. I swear, when places are run like this (where management is non-existent), it brings out the sociopaths. Why do sociopaths always rise to the top?

The sad thing is, when you're dealing with medical specimens, people's lives are in danger.

Sigh. I prayed to god to get this job and I got it. I felt so blessed to get this job I donated my first paycheck to our local homeless shelter, and it's turned out to be yet another utter disaster.

Thanks for listening.

Sure you can rant.

Thanks for writing!

Accountability & responsibility is in short supply now-a-days..... Doesn't matter what career path you're in anymore

Keep yer nose clean, do your job right & carry on.

Ugh. I know someone who works in a hospital where they put all the RNs on 12 hour shifts HOPING THEY'LL SCREW UP so they can fire them and get some younger cheaper help in. Then once they've sent everyone home crying (except the patients who'll get toe tags) they'll bring back 8 hour shifts in a year or two.

Have you considered pushing the company "Notify" button. If people's lives are in danger???

Naturally, you run the risk of the local managers being cousins of the owner illegitimate son that would tell the owners wife about his illegitimate son if he fired them.

It sounds like you are dissatisfied enough with the job to move on if things don't improve. Just sayin...

Or, maybe you can keep your sanity by doing your job the best you can and quietly trying to improve things from the inside.

Considering the job market, you have some tough decisions to make.

I think all jobs are getting that way...........squeeze out the good employees who`ve been there a long time, because they`re getting raises and getting paid more, then bring in new hires on a regular basis so they can keep paying "starting pay". Companies don`t believe in "company loyalty".

If any person worked in health care for a short time they will quickly notice that most people in this industry are 'board-certified' nut jobs. I'm familiar with these labs cause I handled all the accounts for small in-house and very large high-volume reference labs when I worked at GE. Maybe its the formaldehyde fumes they inhale that drive them crazy.

Did you happen to come across this job vacancy or did you know someone looking to hire a courier ?
Glad to see you got a better paying job.

So you got a typical modern American job? Don't they bite?
The big money hospital/doctoring racket is one of the worst, too, in my experience.

I hope things get better for ya though! All we can do is liten for now.

I hear you. It seems a lot of admin folks in the medical and therapy industries aren't the brightest crayons in the box, and yet still get away with murder (pun sort of intended). Yeah, the Peter Principle is alive and very well today...

My wife and I dealt with the medical industry for the first time two years ago.... yep and learned first hand about the mess its in... This was a hospital in Spokane too.. I wonder if its related to your management Drew?

This one time at my work I got a fax that was supposed to go to a 978 area code, well my work fax number starts with 78 so their PDX swallowed the 9 to get an outside line.

I called the number on the cover sheet and they wanted me to fax it back so they could fax it to the right place.

Would have been funny had it not been a referral for some poor patient with 100% of his identity on it.

If you aren't on medicare, don't give any medical people your SSN. They don't need it and they WILL bungle it.

I have a low opinion of most of the people in the medical care field and what they do. It seems that all the charlatans, money grubbers and nut jobs are in it now. There are certainly good ones but the bad ones are like weeds chocking out the good ones.

Pretty much all hospitals are run that way..scary. (yes, I am making a blanket statement, but nearly all of them in my aera are run this way!)

Only if I can rant with you, Drew.

I'm in an office environment with a bunch of former nurses. I have never seen such an unprofessional, incompetent, and overall "witchy" bunch as these people. They're quick to duck work but the first to complain when someone gets a perk for stepping up to the plate to do the stuff they didn't want to do. And "management" does nothing to help the situation. The inmates are truly running this asylum.

I have to wonder how many lives are being saved by this bunch no longer being in a position to give medical care.

Actually, I really appreciate that Groucho.

I should get up off my [censored] and put my god given talent to use. I just haven't quite solidified what it is yet.

Do your job to the best of your ability, and always do the right thing.

That way, when the **** finally hits the fan, you'll know that none of it was your fault.
