I usually get 2 or 3 calls / messages a day with peoples names address phone numbers insurance account numbers and SSI numbers. I usually call them back and tell them how stupid it
is to leave that info on a voice mail machine.

When I had a billing dispute I HAD to resolve it over the phone (as much as I would have liked to have gone in in person and not left until it was fixed to my satisfaction) and the person whom I was calling was ALWAYS letting it go to voicemail, where I had to spill my life story and any account info they could conceivably need.

Then I got a letter saying "you owe us money and we have not heard from you" after the voicemails. I wrote them back about what a crock that was and how their lady never answers the phone on thursday at 1:15 pm, tuesday at 9:05 am, etc.

Is this true? Reason I ask this is because my wife, who's been an RN for 30+ years, tells me that most hospitals work nurses 12 hours for a couple of reasons.
First, she says it's hard to get nurses to work the 3 to 11 shift.
Second...there is a shortage of nurses due to control of who gets in nursing school.

Then she says the majority of younger nurses want the money, but don't want to work to get it.

My wife is in management and she can tell you some horror stories of hiring and of government control in the medical field. Plus she is surprised that a lot of them even still have their nursing license!
 
^ I tend to believe it. There's a gaggle of 60-something lifers near retirement that are expensive in a salary+benefits perspective. Plus the hospital brought in these whiz bang computers from an outside consultant for charting, meds dispensing etc. But they're rubbish; you have to put them in certain spots in the room or they lose the wifi and stop working. The older nurses are the only ones vocal enough to complain. So administration figures they "fear change" and are trying to shake them out. There are plenty of nurses in this region (now), there were even RN layoffs in the state because the state is so behind on reimbursing hospitals on medicaid payments. This is a non-union shop BTW if that colors the politics any.
 
Something that scares me are those real-life Emergancy Room shows on TV like "Trauma in the ER" and those doctors have been working 20 hours straight with a cap nap here and there while consuming coffee and donuts to wake back up.

I could never figure out a good reason for that scheduling.
I don't even want a mechanic working on my car after 12 hours.

Most jobs that require to work safely have work rules (hours). I guess a trauma unit doesn't... that amazes me some guy making life and death decisions and working over 8 hrs is too much. These doctors are working 3 times that much. The human mind/body can't do it. You would think doctors would know this?? but yes, this all goes back to what people are saying here how screwed up medical related junk can get.

My brother is an RN at the VA and even they had been getting rid of all contract (agency) nurses when their time is up. Lots of hospitals simply don't have the need or budget to hire any more nurses. Per diem yes, full-time no.

I too think this is true...

you are spot on about the sociopaths ruling the roost at many organizations today. It really is like living in a river full of piranhas....


One piece of advice to those that need it...

Work to "expectation" and do NOTHING more if you are stuck in one of these organazations..most of the time the supervisiors don't expect more and don't count on it because they do not want to increase pay or benefits.
 
Part of the problem as I see it, at least in the hospital I work at, is it's owned by the Catholic church. Managers/supervisors have no budget authority and it's like cost is of no concern! I can not STAND to see such an inefficient operation.

I work way better in environments where managers have to make a budget; it truly weeds out the sociopath idiots because they no longer have time to stand around and talk [censored] all day instead of doing their job.

Seriously, you could weed out half the staff I work with and keep the hard workers who will bust [censored] and the same or more actual work would get done.

It's like the movie Office Space. Or maybe it's just that I don't get along in environments like that where work ethic is not the basis for judgment. Being cool and social is.

I'm looking for a new job, that's all I can do. There's no point in being miserable while trying to do a job.
 
I don't think it's Catholic Church related-- they are having serious money problems-- but rather non-profit related. You get the same cronyism at colleges where, once again, nobody in power stands up to them and says "you need to cut your prices or close your doors". Go to any college and there are floors if not buildings full of offices for "institutional advancement" whatever that is. If some schmuck can get $50k from alumni and their salary is only $45k they consider that a "win".
