I have a 2006 Nissan Altima 4cyl with 28k miles. My wife drives it 80 miles a day ,mostly hwy miles. I also have a 2005 Nissan Frontier 6 cyl with 18k miles, not driven but approx 200 miles a week. Every where we go is at least a 20 mile round trip. Finally my question, should I use Havoline 10w30 and change it 4 to 5k miles or,M1 10w30 changed every 7k miles.

Go with Havoline. Confirm with a UOA. Most likely you can go 7k miles on Havoline.

Which ever makes you more warm and fuzzy. I used to be a big M1 fan and while I am very disappointed in them I stopped using the religiously years ago and while I almost always use synthetics I no longer do. I am now using Havoline, kind of a JPM fan. I actually made the switch back to DINO because of all the excellent UOA from DINO these days. Synthetics seem to go longer but I can't seem to let it stay in past 3K when I can change it myself at the shop. Not that I on Syn I would not hesitate to go on a 2K+ trip just short of my normal OCI without hesitation which I have done, but if 3K shows up and I am at work it gets an oil change.

Now a conventional oil change. Oh well, enough rambling from me.

I went through the same decision process when I first found BITOG. Do I shell out for the M1 or use dino for shorter intervals? I suggest reading all you can on the board and making your own decision. M1 is good oil, but only you can decide if it's worth the extra $3 a quart over conventional SM oils. If you are going to run an extended oil change interval (over 5K), most here would recommend doing at least one UOA to ensure that the oil is performing as you need it to. Looking though the UOA section, you'll see some results where a person pushed a synthetic too far, and don't even realize it until the oil analysis was performed.

Why limit yourself to those choices?

Altima 2.5L - Mobil 1 10W-30 - 7500 mi OCI.

Truck 3.0L - Havoline 10W-30 - 5000 mi OCI.

Now for what I would do...

Altima 2.5L - Castrol Syntec 0W-30 "European Formula" ($5.69 Autozone) - 10,000 mi OCI.

Nissan 3.0L - Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 (2 for $5.79 at Advance Autoparts) - 7,500 mi OCI.

Some AAP have reduced the price from %1.55 per quart to .75

you have to visit a few stores as each store manager can lower the price just to get rid of it. I bought Havoline Synthetic on closeout for .79 cents, keep you eyes open for closeout deals.

Around here if you follow sales, closeouts, rebates and the like you can get good quality synthetics for about the normal price of conventional oils. My current stash includes a bunch of Havoline Synthetic 5W-30 bought at $1/quart and some very recent Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 also bought at $1/quart (Kragen sale/rebate deal on now). I still have some Valvoline Synpower which was free after rebate last year, it will go into the daughter's Volvo this summer.

If I had to pay normal prices I would go with Havoline changed a little more frequently as opposed to trying the extended drains with M1 route. But as it is it will be at least 2-3 years until I use up my current stash. Somehow I think that great deals will come along to keep me stocked up on brand name synthetics at better than WalMart's conventional oil prices.

Thanks everyone, I will be using Havoline or Chevron oil with the shorter intervals. Would like to see how the new Havoline oil is going to work out since it does have lower viscosity at 40&100 degrees & a lower flash point than the old formula. I believe it will be a better oil since going backwards in technology isn't common practice with most companys.

Going backwards in technology certainly doesn't seem to
bother XM as of late.

Since Mobil 1 is pobably group III now,and costs around $6.25 or so a quart,I consider it a rip-off.My dad and many other people who have been in the automotive field, long before me,have used Havoline with no problems / and or regrets. It's cheap oil, plus it's proven to be a tough oil for years. Go Havoline!

I was starting to think the same way. Then I learned that Group III oils can vary by huge margins in quality. Not all GIII oils are any good. Some equal GIV, some don't.

There is no question that the new M1 oils are providing outstanding UOA result in the few posts I have seen.

Maybe this is a wait and see situation. When more data becomes available on new M1 UOA results.

If the new stuff performs well, I will continue to use it. I have some of it in my current vehicles. We shall see.

If we're talking about M1 full syn, I agree. If we're talking about M1 dino, I disagree.

HAHAHAHA! man you mobil freaks. Your something else.

Mobil "freaks"? So you don't believe a synthetic oil that meets ACEA A1/B1 A5/B5, GM's 4718M (Corvette)and the new Honda/Acura HTO-06 isn't "better" under some,or most conditions, than a conventional oil that doesn't display any of those certifications?
