Soon I'm going to be pulling out my old HS car ('77 Cutlass) that has been sitting for 10-12 years. I have started it every year or two, but it's way past it's OCI. LOL Engine still runs great. I'm just curious as to what oil you guys would run in an old engine like that? I'm thinking Mobil 1 HM 10w40....or Mobil 1 FS 5w40. Even thought about Rotella T 5w40. Back in the early 90's I used to run Castrol GTX 20w50 (I know, probably not the best choice) and also ran some Kendall 20w50. It used to have low oil pressure at idle, but I fixed that in the mid 90's with a HV oil pump. Now it has plenty of oil pressure. I am looking for a big box store oil that will clean, as I'm sure it's not the cleanest engine using the oils of the past, even though I changed the oil every 2K miles back then. I even ran AutoRX through it back in the early 2000's. The car was driven a fair amount in the 2005-2007 timeframe, but has sat a lot since then. Before I put the Pontiac 400 in my Cutlass in 1989, it was in a '73 Grand Am that my parents bought brand new. It was our family car that was used to tow our camper back in the late 70's and early 80's. My dad always did 2K OCI's. The car then sat a lot and did short trips until 1989, when the Grand Am turned into a rust bucket and my HS friend and I put it into my Cutlass that I had just bought for $300 with a blown 260. So that's how it ended up with a '73 Pontiac 400 in it.

Has the nylon coated, pot metal camshaft timing gear been replaced before it fails spectacularly?

I did replace the timing chain back when I did the oil pump, IIRC. I know I did the chain for sure, not 100% sure I did the gears though. I would think I would have seeing I think it's common practice to replace them as a set, as they wear as a set.

I run m1 0w40 fs in my 76 Olds 350. I'll soon replace the valve cover gaskets and check cleanliness again but about 5 years ago I had to replace the intake gaskets and it will still spotless inside as it was when we pulled it from an 81 Monte Carlo in the junkyard and replaced the timing set and all gaskets except head gaskets.
No history on the engine but the car it came from had a trunk full of used oil filters and oil jugs so I'm guessing someone was fussy on maintenance.
I put just over 200,000kms on it since 2007 (summer only driving).

I love Pontiacs.

One of the best oils in existence and relatively inexpensive.

Those engines aren't high pressure or out put engine , I would go with any quality oil. As mentioned a Euro or HDEO oil would cover and hesitations on an oil choice.

For some reason I really like your thought of Rotella 5w40. That said I used Mobil 1 0w40 in every car I've owned for a long time and I wouldn't hesitate to use it here either.

At least they will run forever at that output. It seems like my Oldsmobile might outlive me and I'm 41. I'm much easier to it than I was 20 years ago.

I'm 52 and I bought the car and swapped the motor over after I had just turned 17. Bought car Good Friday of '89 and I was born Feb '72. Hard to believe I've had it now for over 35 years....with the motor being in the family now for over 50 years.

It's the flat tappet camshafts, for you youngsters. Luckily base engines have mild valve spring pressures. Generally these cars are not driven that much.

We used to use Shell Rotella T but there are better oils available now. Even a simple 10w30 with a dose of HDDP will work, if you wanna play chemist. I would just use an oil designed for this purpose; keep it simple.
