I am new to engine maintenance and I want your opinion on which motor oil is best in its own category. All of these are easily found at my local stores thats why I didn't list things like Amsoil.

Synthetic: Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec,Pennzoil Synthetic

Synthetic blend: Motorcraft, Castrol Synthetic blend, Castrol Startup, others?

Conventional: Pennzoil, Quaker State, Motorcraft, Castrol GTX, Mobil Drive Clean, etc...

My personal favorites are:

Syn: Mobil 1 / GC / Redline-(expensive)

Syn blend: none

Conventional: Pennzoil, Quaker State, Havoline, Chevron

No particular order

Edit: I've never tried Amsoil before, so I'm not going to "knock" it, but I would try it at the right price

Syn: GC, Redline, Amsoil, Mobil 1

Blends: Schaeffers (best bang for the buck)

Conventional: Chevron/Havoline, Castrol GTX

Synthetic= Mobil 1
Blend= Motorcraft (the regular motorcraft is being marketed as a blend 5w20&5w30)
Conventional= Penzoil

My choices are based on abvailabilty and economy balanced with quality.

Mobil 1
Castrol Synthic
Mobil Drive Clean

I like Mobil One 5w30, 0w20, 5w40 Truck & Suv-aka Delvac One 5w40.

I do not use synthetic blends.

If you want to stay with the conventional oil for the Honda, the best is 5w20 Honda oem, ExxonMobil Superflo. Both are made by Exxon Mobil and contain good doses of moly, which Honda engines seem to like a lot.

of the oils listed:
1. Castrol syntec (GC only), Mobil 1
2. Syntec blend
3. Castrol GTX, Pennzoil

Now, oil's I can find locally (within 5 miles)

1. Amsoil, Mobil 1, RedLine (last because of price)
2. Syntec Blend
3. Brad Penn, Castrol GTX, Pennzoil

And finally, oils I can't find without mail order or driving >5 miles.

1. GC
2. Schaeffer's 7000 blend (& maybe the new 9000 series)
3. none

asiancivicmaniac,

Of the choices you listed I prefer (cost and availability factored in):

Synthetic: Mobil 1

Synthetic blend: Motorcraft

Conventional: Pennzoil, Motorcraft, and if you find it - Havoline and Chevron

Synthetic: I have Castrol on hand (I'm in a minority on this one)

Synthetic blend: Motorcraft, I'd like to mention Schaeffer's Blend because I don't believe you can match it or beat it. Superb product. It's fully worth your consideration although you might have to order it through Salesrep. However, from a link by Salesrep I did find a place you can get it in Jacksonville, being you're in Florida. PM me if interested. No, I don't sell anything.

Conventional: Pennzoil, Motorcraft, Mobil Drive Clean.

thanks for your response, now i can decide on mobil 1 for synthetic and any of the brands suggested for conventional. now i just have to decide to go synthetic or stick with dino. and yes i can use synthetic since my car only has 4k miles on it right now. ( just to save time for those who are going to recommend me not to use synthetic if i have a higher mileage engine, lol)

synth
Delvac 1/M1 T&SUV 5w-40
Rotella T synth 5w-40
AGIP PC 5w-40
M1 where applicable

blend (currently used only in beaters*)
MC 5w-20, 5w-30 (due to price)

conv (currently used only in beaters*)
PCMO = no preference
HDEO (currently only used in beaters*)
Delo
Delvac 1300
PZ LL

*beater= 125k+/12yr+ roadworthy vehicles with acceptable consumption.

I can't swear these are the absolute "best in class," but I confidently use Mobil 1 0W-40 for my 2001 VW Passat 1.8T and and Pennzoil dino 5W-30 (winter) or 10W-30 (summer) in my 2003 Dodge Startus 2.4L DOHC.

Synthetic: Mobil 1 or GC

Synthetic blend: None, I would mix GC and GTX so I would know what the blend really is.

Conventional: Pennzoil, or Castrol GTX

Synthetic: None can give me the bang for the buck I get with blend.

Blend: Schaeffers - you will never know unless you try it just what this oil can do

Conventional: Chevron/Havoline or Pennzoil
