GM owned up to my 2.4l equinox issues. They still have yet to own up to the wave plate issue in the transmission.
Go to the forums to find out what the main issues are for each of these vehicles.

From what I have seen of other's experiences, the 3.6l equinox is really good.
you can still get the 2016 new I am sure. not sure about prices.
the newer 2017 model and engines are untested.
finally, research the reviews of the dealers close to her. just as important is their service record and ability to fix things.
