Accord or RX350 ... Which car would you sell?

Currently have two cars. My daily driver is a 2014 Accord Coupe with a V6 and a manual transmission which has zero problems and only 35K miles. Also have a 2011 Lexus RX 350 which I use to transport my elderly dad (the Accord is too low for his ingress/egress) which is basically trouble free and has a whopping 190K on the odometer.

The old man is set to move out of state to be nearer my brother and live in assisted living. The new living situation is a bit expensive so I'll be coming out of pocket around $1K a month. Since he's leaving I only need one car and I need to decide which rig to get rid of.

The Honda is a pleasure to drive and I am still enjoying rowing the gears, although I'm getting older (54) and not sure how much longer I'll want to be driving a manual. I would say I like but don't love the car, and I have an offer of $18,000 currently for it.

The RX is fine but not nearly as enjoyable as the Accord. Its comfy and even though it has high mileage I think it's still very viable as a daily driver. I'm guessing I could get around $6K-$7K by selling this car.

The $18,000 I'd pocket by selling the Accord is good margin for my newly expenses, but this car will probably go a significantly longer time than the Lexus before needing any major work or replacement.

Dilemma Dilemma. Any input from the peanut gallery on here?

What is the rest of your financial situation and parking situation like? I understand that the RX is reliable but how much longer? The Accord's only downside is really the manual (not sure how long you want to drive it). It is a newer car and you can probably drive it for another 10 years easily. I am not sure how many miles or years more you can drive the RX realistically speaking, but at 54 you probably can still drive stick for another 10-15 years?

Any other problem like needing a 4 door in the future family need? Commute mpg need?

Do you have any other problem funding the $1k a month assisted living?

I’d keep the RX.

But no part of me is daily driving a manual car that also isn’t utilitarian.

$1000 is my share. My bro and sis are sharing the burden
Good for you to come together to help your aging father.
When the time comes, I can pretty much guarantee that none of my siblings (including myself) will be willing to offer a penny for our fathers care.

But back to your original question, I'd keep the Accord.
You can pretty much guarantee that you'll never have the opportunity to purchase another one for a similar price (given that manual transmissions are going away).
It can be your last "hotrod", enjoy it until the wheels fall off!

Great questions thank you.

The $1K is not much of a burden I think I can handle it without dipping in savings but having a little extra more wiggle room would be nice. Parking wise I only have room for 1 vehicle so definitely will sell one of the two. As far as keeping the Accord long term I think driving a stick until I'm 60 would still be enjoyable for me.

The RX is definitely more useful as a vehicle overall, but I don't really need a truck or suv very often at all. The MPG is kind of a bummer because I do put premium in the RX and it gets a few MPG less than the Honda.

The more I'm thinking about it the more I'm thinking I'll hold onto the Honda. I have a month to think about it and I don't think making a "wrong" decision would have any big repercussions I can't recover from easily.

Yup leaning toward the Accord overall. It's a zippy little car and comfortable too.

$18K is a stupid amount of money for a 12 year old Accord, regardless of mileage or transmission. I'd pocket that and run. Even though the Accord is low mileage, it will likely have all of the age-related wear items fail in the near future.

I will say that the Accord is much easier to work on than the RX.

Agreed on the pricing of the Accord. I bought it for $17,000 2 years and 22,000 miles ago. The market is wacky and there's a small subset of people who really like these particular cars.

We have a 2007 Honda Accord 4 Dr V6 6MT.

An Accord with a manual is a terrific car - very reliable, fun to drive and with low maintenance as a bonus. As for how long to drive a manual transmission, I'm age 77 still enjoying it and can tell you that age 54 is a long way from "getting older". Heck I was 59 when I bought my Accord.
