I thought I had enough. But like the song says, "a little didn't do it, so the little got more and more". When I ran out of room, literally, it was time to move some on to where it would be more useful. My investment in Havoline did net a small profit, so I guess it's all good. Currently standing at about 50 gallons.

When the oil and filter collection starts taking space away from the ammo collection there is a problem. I can't solve it myself so I let them fight it out for shelf space.

I don't get how you guys find oil that cheap. Even at the dollar stores by me it's $3.99 a qt for some no name oil. The chain stores aren't worth the trip if your bargain hunting.,
I have about 60-70 quarts, average cost of dino is $0.50/qt and syn at $1.50/qt before tax. I am set for about 5 years OCI for 3 cars.
If you have oil for the next several changes, avoid buying unless the oil is dirt cheap.
I consider dirt cheap qt for syn or qt for anything else.
Invent your own purchasing rules.
You can sometimes find oil really cheap.
Even observing the dirt cheap rule, you can build an impressive stash of quality motor oil, and you then have no problem doing someone the favor of changing their oil, in return for which they offer you the use their pickup (working truck, not toy) for a day of hauling, or they have no problem lending you tools or garden equipment.
There may be a universal closeout of SM when SN becomes the current API standard, for example.
By early next year, SM may be marked down to almost nothing everywhere.
That's when you'd load up.

My wife knows it costs more than $150 to do her E430 oil change at MB dealers, and my cost of oil + filter is less than $30. She understands that buying oil on sale and change oil at home save time and money.
Oil changes for the next year or so. That means about 20 total quarts for 2 cars. The significant other understands that getting name-brand syn oil on sale requires stocking up. Plus I spend less time with the cars and more time using them.

I just found my receipt from 40q of Superflo Semi Synthetic for $.01c a quart in 2003.
I got 80 gallons of Delo 30 for $1 gallon. Down to under 20 now.
So, the stash varies. It is nice to be able to offer freebies to people. To do that, you have to stock-up on sale.

Although I love oil and the idea of just having more just sounds fun for some reason, I just dont see the point. I have 10qts of oil at the moment and dont need more with my 1yr OCI's. But I did just find on amazon.com that you can order a 5 gallon jug of Royal Purple for only $125! Thats nearly a hundred dollars in savings from individual quarts! Plus free shipping. Sounds like a purchase to me!
