Hello and what is everyone's thoughts on bulk oil that you get at a quick lube place, oil distributor, etc? I still get some Kendall semi syn 5w20 at a FIRESTONE shop and have no complaints with the oil. I did look the "bulk oil testing" thing up on PQIA, and it is severly outdated like from October 2012.

let me hear your thoughts, opinions and what you think.

October 1012 is outdated, 2012 is not.

I don't have an issue with bulk oil, use a viscosity that won't sit in the barrel.

5 months ago is FAR from outdated! Millions upon millions of cars are serviced at manufacturer recommended intervals with bulk oil and never have a lubrication related issue.

Technically, there is nothing wrong with it, nothing at all. However, I still prefer to add my own oil, either out of 5-gallon jugs or quarts. But that is just me.

And paranoid ol' me thinks that one of those "fast lube" techs MY put the wrong "kind" (grade, type) in your car.

Like oil in plastic jugs, it can be good oil or cheap oil. Now if the place is really sleazy and what in the container is not what is on the label, then thats a problem.

I have no problem with the bulk oil itself, as just about every QuickieLube, WM and dealer uses it. I DO have a possible problem with some of the people who handle it though. There is a local owner to a mom-and-pop place that has Quaker State in 55 gallon bulk barrels. I've caught him putting in Quaker State oil in vehicles where other brands were specified by the customer. Now the QS oil will easily get a vehicle to 200K miles, it's just that the customer paid for a different brand that was supposed to come out of a quart container.

^ This is the biggest problem by far with bulk oil.

I use store brand oil though for all my DIY changes, and its all basically bulk FormulaShell. Stuff works absolutely perfectly.

Years ago I asked my dad about bulk oil, his answer was - all oil has been in a big container at some point. As some have already mentioned, the handling of the bulk oil is the key.

Bulk oil is oil that has just not been bottled.
Often times, bulk oil is "fresher" than your bottled oil.
As long as its a shop that does a decent amount of oil changes, especially in the weight your car is spec'd for, bulk works just as well as any other bottled oil out there.

My shop gets bulk VWB 5w30 delivery once a month, they top off our 275 gallon tank. The rest are 55 gallon drums. VWB 5w20 is ordered once a month. Maxlife Syn blend 5w30 is ordered twice a month ( most popular weight and type for our shop ) and Maxlife 5w20 is ordered once a month. Everything else we use is in qt bottles or gallon jugs.

Nothing wrong with bulk oil. It's the same oil that's in the jugs. Now how long has it been sitting there, covered properly, exposed to the environment are variables I cannot control and answers I don't have.
If the shop is busy and those drums are drained lets say monthly then I don't see an issue however I don't know, but I do know that when I open a 5 gallon pail or a quart bottle that the oil is fresh, clean and not contaminated in any way(unless it happened before bottling).
This is where I would trust a mr lube or great Canadian oil change. Their reputation as well as handling and storage methods have a routine to them. And they do enough oil changes that the turn around on a drum is pretty quick.
I have personally seen a privately owned quick lube place have a trough and drum that all the empty quarts are hung on to drain completely. This trough has dust and dirt in it and the quarts wash it into the drum marked 10w-30. I am certain the oil in that drum has grit and dirt and whatever in it,and its pumped into people's cars. I've told everyone I know not to go there once that practice is sheer stupidity, and until that sump load gets filtered there is grit circulating in the customers engine. It's guys like that that give all quick lube shops a bad name.
OP. it comes down to the shop and their practices that determines what kind of shape the oil in a bulk drum is in,because it left the refinery or the blender identical to what's in the quarts and jugs.

wow wonder what you would say about my current fill?
the bottle dates were 04/05

I can get Motorcraft full synthetic in bulk from my distributor for $4 per quart, but it is only available in a 55 gallon drum. If I had the money, I would be a drum of it and store in my garage. If I could get a 15 or 30 gallon drum, I would definitely go that route.

Which PQIA results are you talking about exactly? I'm not finding the bulk oil tests

I don't want a drum in my garage, or an oil change out of one elsewhere. Reason is because of additive fall out. You can't pick up a drum and shake before pouring like you do a qt. or 5qt. jug.

Some drums will sit for years, and additives DO fall out over time.

It is a matter of whether you trust the shop or not. I've seen a mechanics that has a pallet of 20w50 in individual quart bottle in cases in his shop a few years ago. While he didn't use it right in front of the customers. I bet he put it in all of the oil changes he did. So in this case bulk is no better or worse.

A large chain will unlikely try to cut corner like this and the manager fired. Individual mom and pop, hopefully you get a good one as every penny is their money rather than the bosses'.
