What is the thickest oil you've ran in the winter?

Dad didn't believe in multi grades back then so that's what I used for many yrs.

Back in those years he was smart. The old multi's were loaded with VII's

My Dad was the same, too. Everything we had in the 60's to the early 80's lived on QS SAE 30wt.

The thickest oil I ever used was 10-40 Valvoline in early 1978. I switched the M1 5-20 and there was a hugh difference in starting performance in the -15 to -20F temps we had then.

When I was a kid I ran Castrol strait 30 in a Nissan truck year round. As of late I have run 10w30 rotella in my 09 Silverado. I live in Tennessee, it doesn't get real cold all that often and when it does I usually drive my wrangled which has 5w40 in it.

20w50 in the cold eastern Canada in the last few years of my 1989 Tercel in hopes of slowing down a leak I didn't want to fix.

Not the best idea, as the temps can get down to -30C during winter. Much harder to start, but it always did.
