I'm glad you brought that up because I was going to ask if it was just the "button cell".

I love a nice watch and I have a couple of "fine(er) watches" as well(Longines, Hamilton, Heuer).
IMO('cause I love watches), they're mostly about style & details. Although I look at them even more than just that. It's also about horology, quality, materials, fit/finish, internal movement etc., just like a nice car.

But too, I have several Citizen, Seiko, Bulova and many vintage watches that were my Dad's & close Uncles watches from the 1930's-1960's. I even have several Invicta's when they make their comeback in the early 1990's that have good Swiss movements in them. Now they've sold their soul.

I prefer mechanical/automatic but I have quartz as well.

My dad was partial to Caravelle and Bulova automatics. He would get decent service out of them. I like what I see in some of the Bulova and Hamilton watches. However, the service I got from a Seiko automatic was around seven years. I had to replace the bracelet after five years. My dead Citizen really outshined the Seiko. The Citizen still has the original 24 year old bracelet.

I have a 1979-80 SEIKO 5 automatic that I bought brand new and it still works fine.
I’m sure it needs a service cause is a bit fast but there is nothing keeping me from wearing it for the day.
I have watches that are 80-90 years old that still run. Maybe not so well but I can wear them for the day.

Yikes. They had me until we got to the price. I do like it for the memories of going with my dad to our local Mobil station as a kid, 60 years ago.

Really? $850 for a stainless steel mechanical watch with a Miyota movement seems pretty reasonable to me. Middle of the road.

Step up to a Swiss movement and expect to pay a lot more.

Have you priced a race inspired watch from some of the major makers? Makes $850 seem cheap…

The watch market would fall like a house of cards if objective logic, and intrinsic value were the primary factors in determining pricing.

With jewelry, perceived value is vitally important, and everyone has their own levels of price sensitivity and value judgements to consider against desirability.

$875 for a microbrand watch, probably made in China like most watches, and their components, and a barely touched Miyota 9xxx is questionable. But, as long as they find enough people willing to pay that price, the scheme works. In every market segment.

At least it's an upgrade over the previous 8xxx "workhorse," which is about the best that could be said about that movement.

It may be reasonable for all I know. I don't know watches. Although my favorite uncle was a watchmaker and could work magic with a Rolex for those with more money than sense according to him. And a Miyota might as well be a merging of a Mazda roadster and a Toyota. I just like the memories the emblem brings. But $850 is "truck stuff" money. If I could get that look in a <$200 Timex/Casio I might go for it. I splurged on the deluxe Apple watch for the health gizmos stuff. Otherwise I'd be in a Gshock or Ironman.

A watch like this requires very little operator involvement. It automatically compensates for movement error, so the time is always spot on (to within seconds of "correct" time). The calendar doesn't need to be reset for months that vary from 30 or 31 days. And solar powered means there is no battery to change. Personally, I love watches like this. Automatics are the opposite; you have to keep them wound, adjust time for poor accuracy, and set the calendar each month. After a number of years, they need to be serviced also, which can cost several hundred dollars. In truth, that's part of their charm; personal involvement with the tool.

In modern times, instead of radio-control, there are blue tooth watches, which connect to your phone, and adjust the time accordingly. My every day wear watch is a Garmin with such features. I love that thing...
