Because in marketing perception beats reality.

Not to mention that instead of Valvoline "giving away" the product to rebate horders for free, which achieves nothing, they should have offered the next gen at a introductory price at the retail shelf for the first year or so to get consumers interested in it.

This nonsense that the Valvoline marketing people are claiming "that if it was cheaper than the VWB it would be looked at as inferior" is utter nonsense. They are making that excuse because of the marketing disaster they created with the nextgen.

Why did you walk away ? I'm curious to hear about the reasoning myself. Call me uneducated in that respect. I know ATF/PS/etc.. .are hydraulic fluids... buuut...

The refinement and processing of the oil makes it irrelevant. It all comes out the same. The garbage gets burned off/separated. The only thing that gets through is the base oil.

Not to hijack this thread, but where in Wal-Mart do people find the clearance oil? In the oil section, or do they move oil to the clearance section?

Yeah, the clearance section I have seen is in the oil section. Down here in NC its in the outboard oil/fishing stuff part.

NextGen is sent through the same processes as crude oil, called hydrocracking, which separates all the unusable stuff from the base oil, which then gets the same additives & is mixed with new oil, half & half (50%), as VWB. Safety-Kleen is actually the company that does the recycling, and their products are supplied to the US military & many other municipal (& other) users. I have a feeling Valvoline wouldn't be taking the risk of NextGen if they thought there could be problems!

I agree.

But as usual, Valvoline places their bets on their marketing magic instead of common sense.

I hope another major introduces a similar product soon, and does a better job promoting it with introductory pricing for everyone, along with education for doubters.

Maybe SOPUS. They have enough brand diversity to do it without being paranoid about the image of their entire lineup.

Yeah, never know who will do what Valvoline did. I dont think SOPUS will be the one though. Maybe Castrol or Havoline.

Any marketing or promotional effort costs the end consumer money down the line. I just go with sleeper oils that may not have the brand, but are still made by reputable companies. My oil change yesterday was with WMT ST dino. It's a rebranded WPP. Drove my car today and it's smoother with the first few miles than my last OCI, which was PYB. Of course, this is subjective.

I have used quite a bit of ST 5w20 in my civic without issue. Still have about 4 ST 7317 non ecore filters.
