Wagon superiority thread

I don't have any real car 'pose' shots, just this one from after a wax job

and the reason we bought a wagon:

camping gear, climbing gear, two inflatable stand-up paddle boards - all fit without a box on top. Helps so much with MPG on road trips.

2016 VW 1.8T, 5spd stick (yes the non AWD 1.8T models are 5 spd)
lifetime average mpg: 38.x - gasser, not a TDI
'base' model - cheap to purchase. 15" tires - cheap to replace. Yet same motor as TiGeo :)
Great value, all-around use vehicle so far. Also likely it has seen more dirt roads than most SUVs and trucks.

Excellent! Yes, the 5-speed on the base fwd.

Nice, but can it carry a full-sized clothes washer and dryer like a Subaru Impreza hatchback?

2002 saab 9-5 wagon. Yeah took my old washer and dryer to recycling last weekend and was able to shut the back hatch as well. got plenty of looks at the station when I backed in opened my rear hatch and pulled a full size washer and dryer out of the back.

We love wagons over here in Europe.
After two bimmers this is my 3rd one.

I have had a 95 Caprice wagon since '13, bought with 82K and one owner. An EMS pilot I worked with was into B-bodies as well and bought a 96 Roadmaster in '17 with 66K. Unfortunately, he was killed in a farming accident in Oct. 2018. His widow advertised the RM for sale the Friday before this past Thanksgiving and I was able to buy it from her. It has 75K on it now and is in great shape. I could not be more excited about it if it had been a new Corvette! He's riding with me every time I drive it.

thanks for a great thread + all the pics! never had a wagon but looking makes me want one + due to pricing the VW sportwagen would be IT. yours is surely a SLEEPER + its great all the goodies available for modern VW's at decent prices. i found a great tuner-dealer years ago in nearby lebanon Pa. APTuning sharp guys that can do it all with fair pricing considering their talents. they rebuild the manual trannys for dealers + did my O2J 5 spd when i zipped off the 5th gear teeth @ 25lb

I wonder why VW did decide to pass on using a six speed manual gearbox
on the 1.8T FWD manual, probably due to cost cutting. However there's one
gear missing and using an MQ250-5F gearbox limits torque to no more than
250 Nm = 184.4 ft lbs, while this engine made up to 320 Nm in some other
applications such as the Polo GTI, of course using a stronger gearbox.
Meanwhile Volkswagen did introduce an entirely new manual transmission
that's smaller (and probably cheaper) than the MQ350 but stronger compared
to its MQ200 and MQ250 (5F and 6F) brothers. This so-called MQ281-6F trans-
mission covers a torque range from 200 to 340 Nm, which suits the needs of
the current 2.0T Miller cycle engine as the successor of the former 1.8 TSI with
its up to 320 Nm nicely.

On a sidenote:
A tiny 1.5 l MTF factory fill! Quite crazy for a manual transmission specced for up
to 340 Nm of torque. MQ350 is 2.3 l btw..
