VW start-stop logic… or the lack thereof

Yes people complain endlessly about this technology but if well implemented it’s fine IMO.

Recently had a Ford Escape rental and it was well implemented.

Less so on this VW rental car. It’ll shut off the engine ten times in a row sitting in traffic but half the time when I actually want this feature to work it’s unavailable due to “system power needs”

Like I’ve been in the in-n-out drive thru line for like 5+ mins and the engine has been running the whole time.

Any idea why? I don’t think the vehicle battery is low because I just drove 20+ mins…

PS: when I turn the heater on even when the engine is cold the engine shuts off and unless I turn off start stop manually or drive on the highway for a while it takes ages to get warm. The only other solution is to put the climate control to max temp and then it displays “start stop unavailable for climate control needs” so no, that’s not related to “system power needs”

I really cannot say how that works on VW. When I got 2021 Atlas, before I actually had car driven home, the reverse cable that deactivates S/S on start was delivered in mail.
It works poorly IMHO. Especially if my wife was driving, it became dangerous. Got one of the override cables too and never worried about it since.

Who ever invented this technology was just lazy. Put the car in park, shut it off, roll down the window and just wait for that 20 minute traffic light like the rest of us do.

@dogememe
Typical in my experience
If I let my car sit in the lane unused for several days that would be the norm
