2014 Chevy Malibu Stop/Start

A little OT, but it seems like starters (conventional ones?) have gotten so much better the last 10-15yrs or so. We've had vehicles in the family with over 200K miles on them, with the original starters yet. Years ago it seemed they pooped out in a matter of years or under 50K miles.

On topic- does the giant, liquid cooled starter/alternator on these GMs actually move the vehicle along as well as start the engine?

Stupid question. If the engine is warm, and lubed, how will this feature increase engine wear?

It won't. Some don't like any sort of technology. We hear these arguments all the time. "All that high tech is bound to fail", power windows "just another thing to fail", etc.

I always get the high tech goodies and yet to have them fail. I wouldn't worry. But I don't like the idea of the engine starting/stopping. Hate it in a Hybrid as it just feels un-natural.

We'll know in a few years just how good this new tech is for GM. The jury is still out, and the public testing has just begun. BMW owners aren't thrilled with it from what I've read and heard. Opinions vary as always.

Yeah, iStop. It restarts the engine quicker and without using the starter motor (just by firing a spark). It's patented.

They didn't offer the feature on this continent, though.`

When I load this up the engine is also listed under "Brakes" and "Suspension". Any editors on duty at Buick?

Anyway, fuel is listed as "gas/electric" so I assume the motor gives a gentle boost. I drove one briefly, drove like a rental car.

I had power windows fail (passenger side), and yes it was an expensive fix. Simpler is better for longterm reliability.

Stop/start in Hondas can be defeated by shifting to 1st gear, or turning on the A/C. There's no additional wear since the motor is 15 horsepower & can easily spin-over an engine. No problem. (The real strain on the motor is moving a 3000 pound car.) I suspect Chevy's motor is also powerful.
