The only argument here is I don't think a VW owner is a mainstream buyer that loves bulk oil dished out by a dealership. For one even on the east coast you have
10 times the Toyota-Honda dealers and the like. I rarely see VW's around here- which is a good thing as I don't like cookie cutter cars.

The 508 ordeal is not buying oil online. What is so special about it? The confusion around it as well
I guess VW never heard of the KISS principle.

I will add...….. Most people may have to drive 50 miles to get to a VW dealer one way.
I would- so most can't take a day just to get an oil change and minor services.
So I doubt the average VW owner is a start and drive only automotive buyer.

Lots of assumptions there... I'd argue that if someone drives to purchase a VW, they'd have no problem driving to service one. My Audi dealer is 97 miles away... Guess where it gets servcied?

VW is keeping it simple: "This engine needs 508. Use it. Get it from us or someone else."

Is Toyota guilty of the same for choosing 0W-16? They're both new specifications - and they're taking time to show up.

My assumption is, that you don't service your own vehicles from your postings.
That makes you not the typical BITOG member. Not that there is any thing wrong with that.
But you always say they picked your car up and returned it etc. So these details mean nothing to you. Am I correct?

added. I'd throw 0w20 in a 0w16 motor and not even worry a bit about it.

I do service my own vehicles, but I have pre-paid maintenance on the Audi.

And yes, they will pick it up. Many VW stores will do the same for free under warranty and for a charge later.

Could you not just run a high-quality 0W-20 in a 508 car? I think you could.

That is the question...………..!
No one here as answered that and a few actually work for VW- but the 508 seems to be a mystery.
I think if that was resolved you would not hear another word about the 508 oil.

A VW 50800 0W20 is a Long Life oil, and a SN/SN+ 0W20 is not.
They are not the same and yes they are oils, IMHO.

Castrol appears to have designed the oil for VW and it showed up here in 2016.
It appears that the 508 spec was designed to go nearly 19000 miles- 30000km

Looking at this I'd use a quality 0w20 as I'm not interested in running oil out that long
Not really interested in 10k.

For all we know it is Edge extended...

Frankly no person I have ever personally known has gotten 300,000 miles out of a VW.
Not saying it hasn't happened but I've known a number of people that have gone over that with a Toyota.

That is unfortunate...I am in the Midwest and still have 4 dealers within 30 minutes. VW's are fairly common if you watch for them, but you still won't see 3 at the same stop light. I personally like that.

A guy at work has about 270k on his Jetta and it's not a diesel either. Another co-worker has two in the 200+ k range but those are both turbo diesels. And both of those guys are handy and wrench on them themselves.

I would think the cars quite capable of over 300k, but I would also guess the cost of keeping a VW on the road that long might be more than most care to stomach.

Why not just use a regular API SN+ 5w-30 synthetic and change it every 5k miles? That weird thick 0w-20 and thin resource conserving 5w-30 should be close enough no??

Wasn't at all trying to be an [censored]. But we wanted to know what the best VW508 oil is, and it is completely unhelpful to fill the thread with recommendations of any non-VW508 0W20 that some random poster likes. Not just you. But after asking to stay on VW508 oils we get pages more of talk about non-VW508 oils and I had to respond after yours was about all I could take.

That's right. A Porsche motor oil with HTHS of 2.5.

I believe the Volvo motor oil is for that engine with the highest horse power per liter of displacement. .

The sulfated ash in both motor oils is well below the 10% threshold, as you can see.

Motul has a 0W12 and 0W8 motor oil for sale too.
