Valvoline Restore & Protect

I just changed to this oil with my 2016 Volvo XC90, what would you recommend as the oil change interval? Can I get to 10k without worry?
On Facebook, yes, on BITOG, No! Stick to 4K or 5K
How many miles do you have on this Vehicle and what oil and OCI's have you been doing with this oil?

I would recommend keeping the first interval down around 5k and then gradually increase it for the other 3. Maybe wait until the fourth interval before going to a full 10k run. By then the engine should be fully cleaned up as far as it will get (or very close to it)

Sorry for lack of info, 110k miles, first oil change since I bought it with just under 100k miles.

Are you having any oil consumption issues in those 10k miles?

Regardless, I'd follow Patman's advice above and run three 5k mile OCIs and monitor the oil level throughout each run.

Then maybe consider a 7.5k mile OCI for the final run, assuming you decide not to stay with VRP for everyday use.

As much as I like Valvoline nothing on their website nor on any BITOG posts convinces me it's an extended protection formulated motor oil.

My Volvo is the T6 trim with the twin charged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine.

It was new to me when I purchased it with just under 100k miles a few years ago, this oil change is my first one since I’ve gotten it so I’ll be sure to create a log and note the usage at 5k intervals. I wanted to use this oil specifically because I knew nothing of the service history and wanted to catch-up if this engine could use some love.

Unfortunately this engine doesn’t have a dip stick (screen with level-monitor) but I’ll note the usage throughout the interval and report back.

I also couldn’t find any literature on Valvolines website that gave me confidence that it could go 10k. We’re in El Paso, TX where we get extreme dust storms and high temperatures so I may be under an “severe service” interval anyway. Appreciate the feedback!

I’m assuming “twin charged” means twin turbo 4-cylinder?

I would definitely use the VRP 5w-30 grade and change it at one year or 5k miles.
It sounds like you don’t drive too many miles per year with that Volvo.

If so, it may take you a considerable amount of time to complete four OCIs with VRP.

An alternative may be to run one quart of HPL’s engine cleaner (EC 30) and the remaining oil a high quality synthetic Xw-30 oil. The engine cleaner is fairly gentle and a 3-5k mile OCI may give you an indication of the (non) cleanliness of your engine.

If you have the old pistons and rings pre 2017, I would not even try to go 10k.
Stay at 7.5-8k with 5w30 VRP.

Thanks, Patman!

“…. both a turbocharger and a supercharger…….”

“…..extreme dust storms and high temperatures…”

What could possibly go wrong!?

No way would I go longer than 5k miles on any oil in those conditions unless it were HPL’s PCMO line of oils or maybe Amsoil.

And the focus should also be on both a high quality oil and air filter. Assuming one can find a good oil filter these days.

Yes sorry, it is twin-charged with a Supercharger and Turbocharger.

I'm definitely going to go 5k for this first change, get a UOA and see if they think I can go further with it. The oil filter I used was a Wix filter which had a Mann stamp on it.

You really shouldn't exceed what the oil producer recommends for your first OCI. It's really rare to see an oil producer suggest less mileage than (hypothetically) the vehicle manufacturer and/or the Oil Analyzer company.

VRP is not an oil to run extended OCIs on. Stick with 5k and you may want to remain at 5k for the 2nd OCI also.

Is a 10K mile OCI called out in the OM for "normal" use conditions. What's the OM say for sever use conditions?

Here is the maintenance schedule directly from Volvo, I seem to be missing anything regarding a "severe" service interval for oil.

I did find a thread on a Volvo forum that discussed the piston ring issue with these engines and also "severe" services being closer to 5,000 miles.

https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/2016-xc90-6mo-5-000-mile-oil-change-interval.623707/

And a good video explaining the piston ring issue.

Strange they don't address severe use maintenance for the engine oil, only a few footnotes for the air filter and transmission oil changes.

I'd go with a 5000 OCI with VRP if the valve train looks pretty clean through the oil fill hole. If it looks really dirty, go with a 3000 OCI on the 1st run.
