Valvoline Restore & Protect

I put VRP in my 130,000 mile V6 Canyon that had started using a quart between changes. It is almost time for the first change since the VRP and it has lost no oil. VRP apparently cleaned up clogged oil control rings in just OCI. Now if will clean the direct injection caused deposits on the valves I'll be a happy camper.

As will a lot of DI engine owners!

I haven’t read anything to date that has shown VRP will definitely clean intake valve deposits. Then again, time will tell.

Probably partly depends upon the characteristics of crankcase mist handling in a particular setup. If crankcase oil mist can be directed across the backs of inlet valves...maybe an oil with great cleaning abilities could help remove some of those deposits. Toyota sure seems to have a good system where they use a combination of port and DI...that way the cleaners in the fuel can wash the backs of the intake valves...the way nature intended. B-)

When I was young - was shown you pull the dipstick - wipe it - run it back in and out. In hindsight - that just drags oil up the tube … and then on the stick …
I now check oil in the morning - stick out level …
Depending on the vehicle this doesnt help. I can leave my tractor for weeks and it will show high until I remove, wipe off, and "redip".

Another VRP anecdote to add to the growing body of evidence that VRP is Good For You -

I had a CEL that would come and go every few days. Code was for a camshaft position error. Maddeningly inconsistent. Because it would clear itself I was suspecting an electrical problem, and they can be terrible to troubleshoot. I lived with it for a couple of months, but eventually decided to get to the bottom of it.

I visited my local Subaru dealer and talked to the service manager. His first question was “have you changed your oil recently?” Second question was “have you done an engine flush?” Apparently, some of the sensors on the FB25 engine have screens that can get clogged with sludge and that causes intermittent readings from the sensors.

That was what prompted me to change to VRP 0W-20. The CEL went out and came back after a couple of hundred miles for a day. Haven’t seen it since and I’m at 3K miles on my first OCI.

My point here is that varnish and sludge in the engine can cause problems that can be attributed to other causes, in my case a problem in the wiring harness. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

So to mix a metaphor, clean engine-ness is next to goodliness 🤯

When I check mine warm/hot I pull the dipstick out before filling up so the oil has chance to drip down the tube not cling to dipstick and side of tube. When done filling I check.

So here is anecdote, maybe placebo. Pilot has VRP for about 4k miles now doing a bunch of highway. In 6 years / 72k miles the wire braid dipstick annoyed me, just always a duller silver as compared to my flat metal ones. I just filled up as my son is taking on road trip tomorrow. The line part way up and toward the handle stood out to me. I don't recall it that way prior just usually a duller silver like in the middle. These spots are brighter now if that makes sense.

Not the full stick to compare but this was 6 weeks ago.

The oil looks clean, fairly clear. Great job.
That was about 2 weeks after changing it, I would need to check the miles on the OCI at that point but about 68k on motor. I'll do a oil on dipstick version when it gets back from road trip and will be about 4500 miles on it.

IMO it's much cleaner this time in general as compared to my last multiple OCI's that all had a bunch of short trip and fuel dilution. This one is a lot of highway trips as my son had interviews in VA, NC, NH and some PA trips with friends.

Buy Top-Tier (non Costco) fuel in Premium flavor 91-93 octane. Do it repeatedly.... like for a a few months at least.

My vehicles responded to the change within the first couple tank-fuls. Been using it ever since and all it hurts is my wallet. People blow that extra $10-$15 per week on nonsense (stuff they don't need) anyways. Cut out that wrongful crutch / addiction and reward your vehicles for serving you so well.

I want the best anti-wear protection for new / almost new vehicles. I don;t want a heavy cleaner in those 'prevent' instances. As the new vehicles ages into early retirement years, then bring out the medicines for it...... just like our doctors do. They don't give us Prostate shrinkers and colon cleansers in our 20s and 30s.

Just squires 3 jugs R&P 5w30 in trade with my good friend. What should I put it in? You vote and I’ll do it. Focus, or Dakota
Take a look down the oil cap area with a flashlight. That may tell you what vehicle needs VRP first.
Enjoy the experiment, like most-other first-time users are.
This stuff seems to work well on older engines and (I consider it) a waste of money in new / almost new vehicles.

Just curious,
Buy Top-Tier (non Costco) fuel in Premium
Why not Costco fuel, it is rated Top Tier.

Not that I'm advocating one way or another, I typically use Chevron because its on my commute route. But I once in a while I use Costco.

Thanks

If VRP can clean intake valve deposits on DI engines with mist and sheer tyrany of will, I submit that it can also deal sternly with everything from hemorrhoids to hurricanes.

Cue Frank Zappa for more info 😇
That’s a bit similar to some claims around their Modern Engine product a few years ago - the advertising had some dudes running around with borescopes.

Not only is Costco Top Tier fuel but they also have more detergents in them than most other stations. In Canada they advertise that they use 5x the required additives

Costco here in Michigan is all over the place. Because they are allowed to mix-in their own additives in their fuels, I don't trust them to use anything more than the minimum allowed and that
minimum' we can get at any 3rd party gas station around here.

By law, their fuels are supposed to be government-tested constantly. But is that tester-guy that draws the samples looking the other way for various reasons?...... I suspect he / she just might be.

I have no proof, other-than how my vehicle performs and sometimes, it's not good, especially going around corners and re-accelerating. I've encountered poor cornering-acceleration on all four of our family vehicles using Costco gas. So my suspicions are warranted.

I just don't trust them anymore. So I quit buying at the two places near me. Unfortunate, since they are still listed as being Top-Tier fuel and all I buy for years now, is 93 octane Premium..All four vehicles respond great using Mobil, BP, Sunoco....etc..... premium fuel.

But not Costco......weird. Even other Shell stations work well with our vehicles. But hey, it could be me, for I have high, abnormal Sensitivities inside this aging body. I was even seeing some blue edging around the moon for a few days before it turned red. Nobody else seated with me in my vehicles saw the same.

Maybe that's how the term blue moon got started...... by an Intuitive Whisperer perhaps?.... I dunno.

I’m surprised you don’t get a half tank of gas from one station and then buy the other half somewhere else 🤣
